Dave Schotz won the event in Phoenix today. The car is in impound and he is being protested. (He lapped everyone)

Besides the Cowl Tag VIN and the VIN on the door..... Is there another location where the VIN is stamped on our cars?

I'm researching now but if anyone knows the answer, Call me so I can call Dave. 602-740-6933

wow that stinks if he hasnt done anything wrong, but what does the VIN have to do with anything?

I thought maybe the glovebox, but when I went to check, I realized I had already sold it. mad.gif

My 3rd gen had it on all the fenders and inner body panels. I just went out and looked inside the fenders on my 4th gen and under the rear hatch carpet (on the rear wall) and can't find a single one.

If anyone has a laptop with Autotap, HPtuner, or whatever, you can read the VIN that way.

He found another VIN under a moulding on the body.

What's going on Larry, and is he working it out.

Why are they so interested in the various vins? Even if the car was "chopped", as long as the update/backdate rules are met, would it matter?

it sounds like the guy protesting was not well informed on the rules.

I'm still not sure why this was a factor. Dave will chime in when he gets a chance.

When i talked to dave at the last event,(WRP) he had said that SCCA was making a rule's change in March which were removing the restrictor biggrin.gif on the motor and adding brake duct's :drive: And he is trying to update the 98 to 01/02 specs.

This is all bad news for everyone else in T2 here in SoCal nutkick.gif

GREAT DRIVE DAVE 2thumbs.gif beerchug.gif

Hey Guys! Thanks for the help!

It's a VERY Long STORY! wink.gif But to make it short...

April Fasttrack effective 3/1/05, stated that updating & backdating across models '98-02 was now legal, and only '98-00 models needed to run a restrictor plate... so I updated my '98 camaro to '01 specs and removed the restrictor.

Well... the tech guy read it as '98-'00 camaro's need the plate no matter what... but can update & backdate.

I tried to explain to him it was written that way... because if you DIDN'T Update to the '01 manifold... then you would HAVE to run the restrictor plate... (I didn't bring my email from the SCCA Tech guy in KS stating all of this was legal)...

So... then come to find out this guy also wants to see to VIN's... well... the Door & the Windshield didn't match... he wants matching Vins... so we had to take the whole car apart (I removed the front bumper in Impound!) and find a second matching vin... well we finally did under the a-pillar molding.

Well... to really get to the end of the story, after all is said and done... car is DQ'd for no restrictor plate (currently in the Appeal Process)... and we put the car back together...

On my way home... I call a fellow Road Racer... and he says' the GCR (SCCA Rule Book) doesn't say the VINS have to MATCH!!! rant.gif

So... all that tearing apart was for nothing... the guy was just clueless...

The nice thing was the regional Chairman's, Stewards etc.. were all very nice, and said they were looking forward to me winning the appeal.

What a weekend! sad.gif

Note to self ...
Keep ALL correspondence with the log book.

Sorry for your issues Dave. Hopefully some of us can learn from your experience.

What a pain! Good luck with the appeal.

Someone enlighten me. Why do the '98-'00 F-bodies have to run a restrictor with a poorer flowing intake, but the '01-02 cars with the better intake do not? There has to be a good reason, but I just can't see one.

Posted by: Dave Schotz Mar 14 2005, 08:01 PM

Hehee... The 'reason' is SCCA Club Racing does not allow performance adjustments for cars greater than 5 years old... so the rule had to be written (confusingly)... to say...

if you bring in a stock off the shelf '98-'00 Camaro... that is stock '98-'00 specs... you must run the restrictor plate... However... if you update your car to '01 specs (hence get an even better flowing manifold) you then do not need the plate.. because you are running the car as an '01 not a '98...

Fun fun!

Nice drive Dave!!! I'm glad to see that driveshaft went to a good home.

Did you "upgrade" to the smaller cam from the 2001/2002 cars?

Thanks for clarifying that. That wasn't confusing at all! rolleyes.gif

So, basically, they force you to spend money upgrading your car so you can remain competitive, even though it would be competitive without the restrictor, or, you can move to a different race class.

Sounds...fun. I guess. unsure.gif

Good luck with it all!

Hey Kevin! Yes, I did... the car actually had an '01 Crate motor already installed... just with the '98 Intake on top of it! wink.gif

Now it is a full '01 (Same reason I was looking for the Exhaust Manifolds & Cat's from an '01 or up!) wink.gif

Peace!

Sweet. I just didn't want you caught on a "bad" camshaft (since the lift changed). Keep us posted.
