Don't speak. They don't like Texans... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I have connections in the area if you need help.

Watch for busses making a U turn across 4 lanes of traffic (in the middle of Chinatown). I nearly broadsided a bus...a transit BUS.

Why are you going to NYC? (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I have a Dallas Cowboy ball cap and jersey you can wear.

And co-worker has a Boston red sox ball cap I could borrow for you.

Just pretend that it's a CMC race and you'll be fine. Stick to the bumper of the guy in front, don't let anyone in, protect-protect-protect!

"advice from those who have been there?"..... Ummm, don't go!? Stay out of the city after dark, blend in, lock your doors, watch your back (front, sides, top, & bottom), they sense fear, carry a big stick, cover your ass, etc.

Seriously, just know where you're going and don't get off the highway until you're out of the city. Use your favorite online maps and if you have a GPS try to put it someplace out of sight, mine works by sticking it to the dash or at the top of the windshield. If possible I would have the rental company put gas in the car so you don't have to look for a place right next door. Or keep your eyes open for a place nearby on the way out of the airport.

Have fun!

Come on, Gotham isn't that scary! Believe it or not, we can be very helpful and friendly.

My advice for where you are going is to actually avoid trying to cut through Manhattan and New Jersey. Basically you want to go from Queens through the Bronx into the Hudson Valley for Middletown.

PM me and let this native give you the traffic low down. While you're here, enjoy every odd thing from every corner of the world that you won't get to see otherwise!

Actually, NYC was one of my favorite places to drive (the highways - not Manhattan). 3rd, behind the Pacific Coast Highway and the 405 freeway just north of LA (85mph, 8 lanes, less than 10 feet between any 2 cars).

When I was driving in Manhattan (leaving Manhattan to go see Eugenio in Montreal), my wife (ex) was navigating. She says, "at the end of this street, turn right". I pull down the street and hang a right at the green light. I'm looking at a row of 4 cabs at a light (150 yards away) about to head my way. She apparently meant left. I hooked a rapid (multilane) U-turn and we beat it north out of town.

Driving is "interesting" there. It's a little less exciting with a good navigator... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I went to NYC a few years ago at Christmas with my wife's office. I really liked it. I did notice that cab horns are used as communication device's, and that most of the Crown Vic's Ford built live there as taxis. Toyota Vans were making some headway, but there were tons of Crown Vic's. And cops everywhere. Fun place, but expensive. Tip everyone.

They don't have very far to go, and they like being in their cars?

Pretend it's a hp/weight race class....and it's 5 hp per ton. You'll do just fine.
