Where is that? I'm close to Joe Gibbs Racing. I can hear the air guns when they practice pit stops along with the engine synonymous from my back yard. I love it!

Wow....very cool but I can't help but notice how many things I don't like safety-wise on that car. Scary to think about crashing one of those even once at 180+ much less doing it on a regular basis.
Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to see older top-shelf cars up close. |

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to see older top-shelf cars up close. A HR seat, properly anchored harnesses, a HANS, and some real rollbar padding and I'd trust it at 180. The rear part of NASCAR cages, even modern ones, look sketchy to me, but they have some real sturdy frame rails back there, and lots of forward bracing from the middle of the main hoop. I think they figure on more of the rear being a crush zone that we are accustomed to in club racing. What I wonder is how many yahoos stole a 'real Earnhardt shift knob' for their car before the museum just quit replacing them. This post has been edited by Blainefab: Apr 8 2012, 09:28 PM |

I am crrently renovating a 1977 2nd Gen IROC racer seen here at the front being driven by Richard Petty as Daytona and Unser at Atlanta, mine is the beige car. Gotta get it looking like that! Its 99% complete with all the right bits including Mooneyes drysump tank etc. Trust me the build on these Banjo matthews chassis is tank like.

Thanks for posting those pics! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/2thumbs.gif)
(I always thought that those things were full tube frame cars, just like the Cup cars, as I've never before seen close up detailed pics of them.) |

They are! You could take all the panels off and still drive the thing even the seat is slug off the tube frame. This post has been edited by Al weyman: Apr 11 2012, 12:39 PM |

Pre 77 they were just a stock bodied car modified but IROC found it too hard to get them consitantly equal the essence of the series, so they went over to Banjo Matthews tube frame aka NASCAR chassis, its the same chassis in the 3rd Gen. The drysump tank is in a better position than the 2nd Gen mine is in the cockpit and if I was ever to put the car on the track overhere would have to cover it over. Some facts that Ford boys may want to rib you about. Rear Axle, Ford 9", Steering Box Ford, front uprights Ford Lincon, entire chassis Banjo Matthews, all panels apart from the roof, rear section and rear quarters including the floor and bulkheads are fabricated!!! And if you saw the adds a copy I have somewhere and will try to post it you would think they were 100% the General's lol!.

^^^Thanks for the info!
When did they go from the (real) Minilite wheels to the Aero (or whatever brand they are) steel NASCAR style wheels?? |

All changed in 1977 and they were just a pure tube framed NASCAR racer under the skin. The Road & Track article states they detuned the engine as the more slippery shape was hitting speeds of 190mph and was concidered a bit too fast.

I have been lucky enough to be able to go inside the shops and see the current build process. My bother-in-law worked there. sadly, he passed away around christmas. RIP here im standing by him. He was a fabricator for the cup shop. (IMG:http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww342/91CamarosRS/rcr/RCR001_zpsb19782b5.jpg) here you go. louvers..
