That was for second place, too! Gilles Villeneuve vs. Rene Arnoux.

Definitely nice driving and fun to watch... too bad F1 of today isn't even close to that.

Amazing clip...thanks!
Why the heads of F1 don't go bananas until the cars are able to do this again is beyond me. It doesnt sound like it would be that difficult to come up with rules that would enable it. Sorry, don't mean to ruin the thread, it just frustrates me. |

Your frustration is felt by all I'm sure. When you see Gilles push wide in that big left hander and save it I can only think that even Shuey would have been off in the sand. Todays cars in some way just suck I guess. |

That video shows the kind of gritty determination I love to see in competition driving. Just throwing it out and hanging on to get that last inch ahead of the competitors makes for edge of your seat racing. I've never been a HUGE F1 fan, but that type of racing captures my attention every time. Now the only question I have is where did it go? Do the boys driving today not have the same cajones as the likes of Gilles and Rene? Is it rules issues? What gives?

No, its there...just not in F1. Honestly I don't believe its not because the drivers are unwilling to do whatever it takes. All the top F1 guys will do whatever they can to win. The problem is 100% with the cars due to the rules. Last year it was more fun watching the GP2 series since there was an order of magnitude more passing going on there. GP2 cars are identical dimensions to F1, less power (still a lot!), everyone on F1 Bridgestones, little bitty wings. Cool racing.
That edge of the seat experience is still there in other series, they're just harder to find on or TV. All of the pro sedan classes from somewhere else have it. Ever watch a German/British/Australian Supercar race? Those are wicked. |
