Well, I'm writing this from a work computer. I haven't had browser access for the internet for about a week now. Something called incredifind hit my computer and has taken out my Internet Explorer. It apparently got on my system before I got my firewall and Ad Aware.

I now have the following software on my computer to keep crap like this off of it:

Zone Alarm
Ad Aware
NAV
Spam Net

Today I finally found some files at work that should help fix it, but they amount to another 4 programs I will periodically run on the computer to find things like this. Hopefully they work.

It's just amazing to me that people write code like this just for the fun of it. What a waste of human life.

You may want to download Mozilla. Browser from the folks who got canned at Netscape when they were bought. Very stable browser with pop up protection that acually works and the ability to open links in tabs (my favorite feature).

I had some stuff happening 2 weeks ago too..found lots of corupt/unwanted files from stuff I think I saved on the internet. I found one morning some stuff had just downloaded itself to my desk top some casino crap(2)and the install program I think goes w/it...how I do not know? But thats when I started getting around to updating the Mcafees cuz I knew something was wrong, thats when I found the above. Those 2 parisite downloads on my desk top I tried get rid of and was not easy the kind that don't want to delete/remove wifey helped. Then I caught Typhon worm before it got in luckily 3 days later Mcafees got it again. Zone Alarm is supposed to be good I got it free.

I was wondering where you where (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

My computer is infested with this crap and I cant shake it for the life of me. I have adaware (the pay for, upgraded version that aint worth a shit). There are days when I cant get ANYTHING done at the office because of this stuff. I run adaware and for about 2 minutes everything is great. and then right back to the crapper.

I think they need to find out who came up with this data mining crap and drag him into town square and give him one right in the grape.

I ran spybot last night and no luck. Today I posted my Hijack This log on the aumha forum and got some new suggestions. More work to do tonight. This is so damn irritating.

I won't switch to a Mac though. I bring work home a lot and having a comparable system at home to what I use at work comes in handy many times.

Tried those manual removal instructions last night. Nothing is left of incredifind that is referenced in those instructions and Bazooka doens't find it. I'm dealing with something else now I suppose.

Yeah mine was too,and it started not doing stuff, did really weird stuff after I saved Jons Bunny vid.Would actually shut off the computer when trying to veiw it Black. And then the mystery downloads.I knew I had something wrong. I could not get rid of them.Till I upgraded my McAfees virus scan and was able to isolate the ones that were problems even unwanted.I don't want to exagerate here but close to 100 files through out my computer.I deleted/cleaned easy with McAfee, but still some where unmovable at that time. But they have a quarantine area I used it,and then was able to completely clean the computer of the stuborn/sticky ones.Maybe try if you don't already have this program if you do get updated.

There is this MMx@bIL or something worm going around now that is attaching itself to mailers and spams too. And that Typhon worm. Once these things get in "I here" they go from program to program everytime used and is nearly impossible to get it all,cuz is constantly speading infecting. THIS STUFF DOES SUCK some people (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

I get warnings of these things from my program, and have seen it grab something and eliminate it right in front of me...cool.

Dialers Ring Up Hijacked Phone Charges
Also known as "drive by downloads", Web Dialers—often sporting garish names like XXXDial or CashDialer—prey on dial-up account users running unpatched Windows operating systems, older versions of Internet Explorer or PCs without good anti-virus software. The scam is devilishly simple: Simply by visiting a site, you can become targeted and have your online session redirected to an expensive ISP—in the blink of an eye, without your immediate knowledge.

Some pages are more brazen, asking unsuspecting surfers to "Click here to see adult content" or "Play a game", which trigger the download of nefarious payloads in the background.

"Most Web Dialers don't ask permission before they drop a piece of executable code", explained Bryson Gordon, senior product manager for McAfee VirusScan. "Regardless, they all instantly disconnect your session, then reconnect you to another service. You notice nothing, until a month later when your phone bill arrives with unexpected charges."

The threat is huge. "We've detected about 250,000 different Web Dialers, many spawned by organized crime in Eastern Europe," Gordon added. "And since August 2003, we've noted 4 million computers affected. It's not uncommon to have victims report $5,000 charges on their phone bill. Some Dialers redirect to services charging up to $500 per minute."

The Best Way to Hang Up on Web Dialers

Follow a key anti-virus best practice: Always update your OS with the latest patches from Microsoft.
Install spyware detection. For example, McAfee VirusScan detects then deletes a range of intrusive spyware, from Web Dialers and adware to key loggers, which secretly rob passwords, log-ins and credit card number numbers.

"A recent German study comparing spyware detection by 15 anti-virus products put VirusScan at No. 1, with the highest Web Dialer detection rate, 98.9%," said Gordon, "far ahead of Symantec at just 65%."

Regularly run on-demand spyware scans, especially if you frequent online adult or gaming destinations.

Go look for a program called "CWShredder". It has cleaned some of the "hijack" software off of computers for friends of mine (I used it to clean them up).

Worth a shot.

I now have a new computer. Got an e-machine that will suit my needs just great. I ended up trying to reformat my hard disk on the old computer and start over but realized it was pointless. It's a computer I built a few years ago and had a 6 Gb hard disk in it that I've carried from many previous computers without reformatting it. There was just too much junk, and when I got to the point of reformatting the hard disk and reinstalling Win98 I realized I was wasting my time. My old computer will now be reformatted and cleaned up and used as a 2nd computer in the house, which means I can take my time doing it. My new e-machine is damn quick though. I don't know if my old network card was slowing down my internet connection or what, but I'm routinely getting 360 Kb download speeds in IE with the new one. I almost never got over 100 and was normally in the 30-60 range with my old computer - same modem and line connection.

By the way, I tried CWShredder, LSPFix, you name it I think I tried it. Some of this malware is just downright awful.

I highly recommend Zone Alarm as a firewall, Spybot and SpyWareBlaster. They're all free. They stopped many new programs trying to get on my old computer as well as this one already. I obviously learned about them too late on my old computer.

Now to transfer more files to the new computer. I was using a tape drive for backups (yep, a rather old tape drive). Just got a 80 Gb USB external hard drive that is great. I've obviously been spending too much time at work and on the car the past couple of years. There's some really neat new technology out there.
