How many of you racers have moved the battery to the trunk to help balance out the front/rear weight ratio? Is it helpful? What other options are there to assist in balancing the car?

There's quite a few threads on this already if you just look a bit. I know because I've been reading them as of late. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) FWIW I considered doing this. Now I've decided to go with a small, light battery in the stock position. "You cannot install that battery far enough back and away from the driver to offset the weight. You could put it on a pole, 10' long hanging off the back and the side and it still wouldn't be far enough back." Lou Gigliotti - circa 2003 Consequently, mine is in the spare tire well. |

Heh... Nope, not in the trunk - that's a crush zone. Get that fender folded around the battery and ripped sheet metal cut thru the + cable and you'll have a fire going that can't be stopped with the cutoff switch, and maybe not even an extinguisher - it can just cool it down until the battery is dead. Fuel tank is back there, too. I put the battery box and + cable within the confines of the cage. |

I agree wholeheartedly about folks who put the batteries in the little hole by the rear fenders.....sounds like a good idea, but is bad for the crush zone you mention. However, my spare tire well IS within the confines of my cage, and if I get hit that deep into the car....I am NOT going to be worrying about the battery getting taken out. LG's response to that was "did ya build it to wreck, or did ya build it to win?"

I agree with that to a degree......but putting the battery in the fender well can cause a failure from racin' like you boys from the south and your NECKCAR like to do.... I run mine just behind the passenger seat so somewhat offset my weight, and keep the weight low and central in the chassis.

Why not run a 14 pound gell-cell battery in the stock location, skip on the 14 pounds of COPPER you need to relocate the battery into the back, then simply add some lead ballast to the places where you really need to add mass??
