 BMW X5, Drove bosses car today |

I drove my bosses X5 today. About 20 mile trip. WOW. What an amazing car. I was amazed by the grip. The steering response was awesome. The car was just asking to go fast on the e-way. I ran it close to 90 through some traffic at one point, just awesome for a sport ute, or even any car I've driven. After getting back to the office I checked a copy of Car and Driver, .83 G. Not bad. I cannot express how tight this car felt. Not that I'm any kind of expert, but the shock and bar settings felt great.
Quite a driving experience. On another note. Part of my trip was through some of Detroits finest getto. In and around what's known as Jeep Truck Engineering. If any of you know this area you'll understand when I say. Spending time in area's like this is hard to put into words. You just have to see it. A crazy type of place. The decay is beyond words. It's a problem so big that I could never see this being overcome by man. It would take nuclear holocaust and a whole new start to fix it. Steve |

Randy, I recall reading that you had a bad experience with a BMW. And I'm guessing that you probably had a bad experienced worsened (is that a word???) by having to deal with a bad BMW dealer. I understand bad BMW dealers. They suck for the most part. Although good BMW dealerships are out there.
But for the most part, in my experience, BMWs are great cars. We have three. Chris loves driving all of them, bought a 2002 as a daily driver, has decided that my '89 325i is hers, and commandeers my M3 whenever she can. The Ultimate Driving Machine is a perfect description for BMW, and it seems that Steve has gotten a little taste. I've never driven an X5, but I hear that they are a fun drive, and that the X3 is a blast. So that's my two cents. Steve, what engine was in that X5 you drove? 3.0, 4.4, or 4.6? Jason |

Well mine has a few things that would keep me from calling it "The Ultimate Driving Machine" but so far its been a very, very good car.
Of course the warranty on mine is looooong gone so I don't ever plan on going to a dealer if I can help it. |

One of my best friends just sold his '95 M3 to buy a '02 X5 4.4 w/ the Sport Package (amongst others) and the 19"s. It is pretty peppy, and does handle amazingly for a big ute...
However, I went to the GM AutoShow in motion and absolutely beat on a SRX V8 (Cady). I have to say I was amazed it was as flick-able and seemed to handle nearly as good as the X5 (with a more performance tire like the X5 carries on its 19s I think it'd be even). Cady has come so far in the last 5 years, it's truely wonderfull. But back on topic, yes the X5 is damn nice vehicle... but not worth the $ in my book. Nor the BMW headaches. -TJ |

TJ, I agree that Cadillac is making an extremely nice turnaround. I'm wondering if their cars will begin to hold their value. That's one thing that BMW really has going for them is that their cars maintain pretty good value compared to other marques. Although I wonder if that won't shift as well once the newer cars with all their sophisticated gadgetry wind up out of warranty and prove to be expensive to maintain.
Knocking on wood pretty heavily here, but my M3 has been pretty easy on the pocketbook as far as maintenance goes. And it has kept its value really well after almost 4 years. Jason |

I already know Beemer ppl avoiding anything w/ Idrive (like my buddy who got the X5 considered newer 5/7s but didn't want the Idrive). I have a feeling you might be right. -TJ |
