I'd like to get some weight of the nose of my car, so I'm actively looking for an OEM Camaro SS hood ('98 and up only, and MUST BE THE FACTORY HOOD, not aftermarket). I'm willing to drive a bit to get it. Would prefer it not be all cracked up. White would be GREAT, but beggars can't be choosers. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Please let me know if you have such a thing, or know of one in the Northeast/Mid-atlantic/Mid-west area. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Pick A Part in the Cleveland had one on Ebay for sale. They did not sell it but might have sold it locally. You may want to give them a call. If I had the money I would have bought it for my wife's NBM z28.

Dammnit Sam, the arms race is really heating up, eh?

So, what's the weight difference anyway?

I actually don't know the weight difference...... If anyone does I'd love to know. I'm just sure it's lighter, and that's all up front and up high.

I'm just trying to finish the job, and I'm tired of hearing how not done my car is from some folks. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Besides I want it faster, and it's stuff like this that's left (because my AC and stereo are NOT coming out).

$849 no shipping. Ouch. Wonder what a new one costs...... Anyone have a part number?

Yeah, that's just great. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) I join the class and you make the car even faster. Thanks.

Somebody sell Sam their (newly lead filled) stocker.

Just trying to give everyone who's NOT ME the (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/buttkick.gif) ing they deserve... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The thing is, I'm not the only one working on a car. I'd be content to not spend anymore money if I could. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I wasn't aware that SLP still had new hoods. I now have a plan B. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) But I'd still like to save some $$$ so if anyone sees one, can you let me know--please?

I don't think it is all that much lighter. I have the one from my busted up 02 factory SS hood and my aftermarket 96 hood is considerably lighter.

I need a black one to repair my 02' or to have someone repair it. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif)

SLP has new ones?

I checked GMpartsdirect last year and it was about $1200 brand new. Should be number 12369963. Make sure you get the hood grill like insert too or you will be protest bait. Please weigh the thing if you get one by holding it while standing on a scale, then weigh yourself on the same scale and subtract. Then of course weigh your stocker the same way when it comes off.

I'm guessing your going to save as much weight as what a camcorder, Chase cam system, and camera mounts weight. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/nutkick.gif)

Wait wait wait. Phil, you have an SS, Sam you have a Z28. Both of you back away from the keyboard and weigh your hoods! Or, lets just do it at the next big event we have. If I remember right it's just 4 bolts and a couple struts! Hell I'll even throw mine on a scale to get an LT1 baseline. Sam, is your hood steel?

I'd be willing, but I'd have to get Phil to agree. I'm not sure he'd want to take his hood off for me. After all, he already has the presumably lighter hood. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Besides, if I get Phil to do anything, it's getting me the stuff I need for the offset bushing pricing/production. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) *ahem*

My hood is steel.

Maybe this would solve the issue:

Can anyone with a stock Z28 laying aroiund weigh it? Can anyone with a SS hood laying around (Barney maybe since you seem to have one) weigh it? Then we'd have some comparison numbers at least without taking hoods off cars.

Im sure the factory ss hood is a good bit lighter then the z28. My neighbor has an ss and you can feel the difference just raising the hood. I'm curious to know the difference too.

FWIW, SLP changed the strut rods when they installed the glass hoods. They auctioned off a crate full of strut rods sometime last year, I think. I don't remember the details, but you can't judge the weight just by lifting the hood on the car.

Not a wuss thing, I spent PLENTY of time in non-AC cars. It's a mental thing, I'm a lot more alert @3pm on a 98 degree day with AC than without, and since this is largely a mental sport.......

Life has been crazy, notice I havn't really been in here this week. I'm working on the drawings right now! I had already drawn them in another CAD package, but kept forgeting to grab the CD from work. I'll just draw them again. If I see you next Saturday at Fed-Ex, you will get them. Now I just have to finish my Thesis, mail back a bad eBay item, finish building my camcorder mount for the Camaro, and drink some of the crap beer my wife bought last night because I'm to cheap to pour it down the drain! I have six packs of Dos Equis Special Lager and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat in my fridge, it's a sad, sad day. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/gr_sad.gif)

Hi people...

Once again bringing this back from the dead.

http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=11263

I called SLP and talked to a sales guy to see if they have a weight difference.

The difference quoted to me between the 2000 z28 hood and the 2000 SS hood was only 6 lbs. If anyone else wants to call the tech line and see please do to verify the number.

I weighed one each last nite - both are from LS1 cars, and have no striker/latch/strut brackets/hinges/hardware, ie bare naked, cept the steel hood has the sound insulation = mebbe a couple of ounces.

LS1 SS hood = 50# surprized? I'm pretty sure it's an OEM. It has made in Canada, and a patent # molded in, and CHD11166 carved by hand

LS1 Z28 hood = 48#

Both hoods are available, steel hood has good paint but a couple of dents. SS hood is rough - it's all there but needs some fill/crack repair and paint.

WOW I didn't see that coming I would have though the SS would be lighter, I guess I'll strike that from future upgrades!

That is hard to believe. I'm not saying you are wrong, just doesn't "seem" right. When we had both the 2001 TA and my 2000 SS, the TA steel hood "felt" much heavier when opening them. I would have thought the Z28 hood would be similar in weight (if not heavier) than the TA hood. Plus the SS hood uses a different prop strut part number. I thought they were reduced pressure due to lower weight.

Are you sure you weighed the right?

Yes, weighed them twice cause I knew folks would be dissapointed. A couple of thoughts:

-I picked up the hood from a guy parting out a wreck. I didn't look over the car well enough to determine if it was a genuine SS - can someone confirm that the serial number was hand engraved, and matches the format of this one?: CHD11166

-There may be more variation in the weight of the fiberglass because of the inherently less precise mfr process: a little more or less resin will affect the weight moreso than a steel stamping, so YMMV. The fg hoods may have been sourced from different lines over the years, too.

-The earlier LT1 hoods were a bit lighter - If I recall correctly, I got 42# for a steel LT1 Formula, and 35# for a fg LT1 WS6 hood. I no longer have them here to check.

-Gm may have RAISED the pressure on the SS struts, to make the hood feel lighter

I just looked all over the underside of my hood and found no numbers. Unless they under one of the hinge or prop strut brackets, there are none.

Per a local body shop, fiberglass hoods aren't as dimensionally stable as steel, so even if all the gaps are perfect after installation, they won't stay that way as heat and gravity take their toll. That may not be significant enough to matter to the racing ground [err, I mean the racing crowd], but for the average customer, it could be a problem.

I wouldn't be surprised if GM made the SS hood a little thicker than it needed to be just to avoid warranty cosmetic repairs. The main motivation for fiberglass was probably the crazy SS ram-air ducting, not weight.

Under the strut bracket - this is the 50#er

I have my stock one that got dicked up in a accendent (slightly broken front piece) but I'll weight it and see what it is... Sam you can have it (for a driving lesson at CPA) since it's black and needs to be repainted with some minor work... hell I'll even take a picture of it when I weight it

-There may be more variation in the weight of the fiberglass because of the inherently less precise mfr process: a little more or less resin will affect the weight moreso than a steel stamping, so YMMV. The fg hoods may have been sourced from different lines over the years, too.

Update - Another OEM LS1 SS hood passed thru the shop, and it is much lighter: 37# It looks the same topside, but on the bottom it is clearly from a different mold set. No serial number, no markings at all.

Interesting. Maybe that's why I could find no numbers on my hood.

Alan:

Could you post pics of the underside of both hoods. I wonder if there was a change made between/during different model years and I'd like to see if mine matches the heavy one or the light one.

Hey Alan,

Was that the white hood? That wasn't OEM.

We weighted Casey's '98 SS hood with the front latch hardware and no hinges at 45 lbs.

Oh.. OK, I thought you told me it was OEM. I have a good memory, really, but it's short ;-)

Anyway, 45# with the front latch is still 5-6# lighter than the one I have - here's a pic of the heavy one. Note the defined seam all along the perimeter where the top and bottom pieces are bonded together.

Any data on LT1 camaro SS hoods? Are the 98+ Z28 hoods steel or, uh, non-steel?
