Well, after goofing around with Porsches for a while I've decided to get rid of them and build a Camaro for the track for next year.
I sold my '85 911 last weekend and now I'm selling my 944 that I spun a rod bearing in a couple weeks ago. I just bought a 1994 Z28 hardtop 6-speed car and I'm picking it up Saturday. As I sell my other car and some parts to come up with cash I'll be going through the brakes and suspension to get it ready for next season, mainy for AX, and HPDE's. The car has some engine work and probably makes 325hp at the wheels, so it should be pretty fun. I think once I add some 1.6 rockers and get the computer tuned it should get me another 25hp at least. I've been reading up on some of the information here, it's definitely helpful as I'm a relative newcomer to the F-body. My brother has had a 1999 T/A for a few years, but he's more interested in drag racing. The upside is he has an LS-1 aluminum driveshaft, and LS-1 rear brakes (the car already has LS-1 fronts) so I'll get a few freebies from him. I'll be sure to post here as my build progresses. I'm sure I will also have lots of questions for you guys! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Ahh, another Porsche nut. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) You'll find your mod/repair budget goes WAY further with f-bodies. Also, my f-bodies have always been able to handle way more abuse than either of the Porsches I had, although they do require a little bit of a different driving style.

The money factor was definitely a consideration in making the move to an F-body. I have been catching a lot of flack from all my Porsche buddies, but I'm sure they will quiet down next year when I give them a sound thrashing with my Camaro! Of course I keep thinking about taking a 944/968 and dropping in an LSx engine. An 86 944 Turbo would be just about perfect with a good cam/heads LSx. 2700lbs, 450HP, and near perfect 50/50 weight distribution (the LSx is within about 50lbs of the 944 Turbo's engine/turbo/intercooler setup). Of course, a setup like that would cost as much (or more) than a nice used 996. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

My plan was to take a normal 944, put the 944T drivetrain in it and drop in an LS2. I deep sixed that plan though ultimately due to the reason you cited, cost. I will say this, after having only Porsches for the last 5 years I had forgotten how much fun a nice torquey V8 is! |
