I want to weld (mig) a bike rack (read bicycle) that will clamp onto the draw bar for my hitch. My hang up is lack of experience in choosing the correct gauge of metal. I'm thinking square tube, as thin as possible. It needs to hold 2 bikes.
General design is going to be a 'Y' to support each bike in 2 places. The clamp will unbolt from the bike rack itself to allow for different clamps for different draw bars. I have a design in mind for the clamps, really just need some advice on what size square tube (or alternates to square tube if needed). Any input? Thanks. -Jon |

They make what you want cheap enough thats it's probably not worth your time to make. Here's an example: http://www.bike-racks-plus.com/categories/..._Bike_Racks,824

Here's an example: http://www.bike-racks-plus.com/categories/..._Bike_Racks,824 This is a learn to weld project :-) I'm finding useful things I want/need to make for my self. Part 1 was weld a welding cart, then weld a welding table. now I'm onto the bike rack. Also though, I want to be able to keep the ball mount free to connect the tire trailer to, all the ones I've found so far either clamp to the ball mount, or replace the entire draw bar. Thanks for the suggestion though. I figure if all else fails I'll check out a few retail ones and mimic the materials. -Jon This post has been edited by rushman: Jan 14 2009, 05:45 PM |
