I drive 13 miles to work (though my 2002 Z has 56k on it, I drive a bunch, but not to work). I've considered a beater myself. But, I think I need a beater truck/tow vehicle if I were going to do anything. I guess if I bought a beater, I'd start working on the Camaro (headers, heads, cam, exhaust, etc).
