Howdy,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks...A1%7C240%3A1308

I can't believe someone wants to pay >$20k for this thing.

I _really_ can't believe that doesn't meet the reserve.

They did not even bother to wash the 3ft of dust off it, probably afraid the paint would come off too! LOL!

I can see 20k for a new thirdgen 1LE, but it would at least need a TPI motor. It is a relatively low option car, but TBI gets a big thumbs down...

That's not a TBI, those started in 1988, that's a Quadrajet 4bbl. That's a car that should get it's butt handed to it in a drag race by a good running factory VW GTI (2000-2006 1.8t or VR6).

I'm confused, they sold the factory wheels to put aftermarket wheels on it, but never did. So, they had to have been intending to drive it. What happened? And why wasn't it prepped at the dealer? That makes me think they bought it as an investment, but then why the wheels issue? To look at the interior, I don't doubt that it is what they say it is, I'm just confused about why it is what it is (if that makes sense).

I thought all IROC's had the TPI engine? 85's was the only year that had the 1226870 ECM, which is usually replaced by the 1227165 or 1227730 when it comes time to do tuning.

I test drove a 1986 IROC with a T5 many years ago and it was a carbed car. I've actually driven one. At the time it seemed fast, but it was really a 150 hp pig too.

A female friend has a 1987 Camaro (not an IROC, it actually looks like a berlinetta, steel wheels and all with T tops, manual everything and a T5) that's got the 150 hp carbed engine in it. I freshened the gaskets and seals in that engine once for her. She bottomed the car out and ground a hole in her oil pan, while lifting the engine to get the pan off, the intake shifted and started leaking coolant down through the block (dripping off the crank), so we pulled it and put fresh gaskets in the whole thing. That was the last year of the carbureted Camaro's.

My guess? They removed the wheels/tires to preserve them and one of two things happenned. They misplaced them, or more likely they were stolen from wherever the car was being stored.

The excuse they give is:

QUOTE
Unfortunately the original factory wheels and tires were removed soon after the car was delivered. I was told the intention was to put custom wheels and tires on at that time but that was delayed for some reason after the originals were sold, so the junkyard rims and tires have been on ever since. However the original lug nuts, marked "metric" are all there.

That's the only reason I question it. If they'd said what you mentioned, I'd have said "makes sense to me". But something seems a bit odd. On the other hand, who buys that generation IROC with that driveline as an investment. Maybe they just forgot about it, who knows.

And he couldn't afford a car cover?

Good point on the TBI; what was I thinking.

Yeah those are pretty much dogs. The old SVO Mustang would eat them up.

look on the bright side; it would make a great chassis for a CMC car. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

having been the owner of more carbed turd gens than most, I'd have to wonder why they'd buy the carbed motor instead of the TPI except that the first year TPI was a sizable turd too.

on a side note I've been oogling an 87 IROC near my house thats been sitting for at least 4 years. I was sad to learn that it was a carbed car that hasn't run in many years. <50K miles on it. So now I'm content to just look at it as art. Art with moss growing on it (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

actually 85 was a good year for TPI. 215hp. 86 is when the peanut cam came out and power dropped to 190hp.

IF the '87 IROC is an L69 car, it is very rare. might be worth a look.

hmm...didn't know that. I know the MAF cars have the slow computers (have/had one) and I figured with the 85 not having a roller cam would have been worse... interestingly though the 85 TPI was only available with A4, at least according to thirdgen.org

unfortunately, its an H code (LG4) automatic car. Its mostly nostalgia that make me want it...plus it has nice interior (rare for one of them) and the exterior should clean up well.

With 5-6 years of posting and lurking on the thirdgen.org forums, it doesn't surprise me at all. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Wouldn't all the gaskets and stuff have to be replaced after sitting that long?

It really depends. How good the storage was is just part of the equation. I think you can expect anything. My neighbor just got an 1100 mile 1970 Z28, it had not been run in years. He fired it up for me (a second or third fire up) and it did have a slew of issues (bad dist), starting with a leaky radiator. He put some extra oil in it as a precaution and it was indeed smelling of oil and a bit smokey out the pipes! Now this car is a real treat of history, unlike our poor 3rd gen Camaro here! This car was kept in storage pretty much until now by the original owner, looks almost brand new. It is weird to see a 70 Z28 with near perfect window glass, upholstery, and paint!

I wouldn't even start it, just pull it out and tear it down. If the bores rusted, they'll trash the rings and you'll have it apart anyway. May as well just start by pulling it apart without running it. At least if you're trying to keep it "numbers matching" and I'll expect the carb to need a rebuild as well.

Or, drive it until it starts leaking like a sieve (and loses oil pressure due to the rust in the block extrude honing the bearings when it's running).

They make fancy HD borescopes now that you could look through the spark plug hole at the bores and see if they are rusted or not. Would save taking apart a virgin car, once it's apart it would never be the same again. I'd clean it up and leave it alone. Just treat it like a piece of furniture and never start or drive it. The car's only redeeming value is that it has 4 miles on it.

It would run just fine. Sure it would develop some leaks, but I doubt the inside of the motor is rusted up. These motors were sealed up a lot better than the muscle car era motors were.

True story. Back around 1990 or so a friend bought a 1970 Torino Cobra that had been parked for 15 years, outdoors and uncovered. A bunch of water leaked in through the shaker scoop and made its way into the oil pan over the years. We pulled the pan with the motor in the car, cleaned it up, pulled a couple bearing caps and they were fine.

We put it back together with a new fuel pump, plugs, wires and points, swapped the carb off my car onto it after flushing out the old gas as best we could. With a little ether we got it running, and actually drove it. It ran like shit, but well enough to do brake torques.

And there was a water line in the oil pan, and on the crank. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I was worried about open exhaust and intake valves letting moisture gather on the cylinder walls (which can't have much, if any, oil on them now) and causing bore rust.

The OEM exhaust won't let a lot of air circulate, in or out. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
