I almost called a tow truck to get my car home from today's autocross. the throttle cable let lose on me crossing the finish line at WOT. Luckily I had some cable/zip ties and jerry rigged it to get me home. The ball on the cable pulled out of the plastic cup that sits on the brake pedal lever. I could just barely accelerate to 25mph and used cruise to accelerate from there since it has it's own cable. It was fun hitting "resume accel" after every shift or when I hit the brakes. I just about wore the cruise out-I don't think it was intended to take the place of the accelerator pedal. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
Note to self: pushing the pedal through the firewall does not make the car go faster. I had that habit when I first started autocrossing and it must've fatigued the plastic over time. |

I had a throttle failure last year.
Not actually the cable. The little clip that holds the gas pedal in the pedal hanger came off and the gas pedal itself fell out of it's bracket. Zip ties not only saved the day, but lasted the rest of the year. I didn't fix it right until early this year. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) |

Back in 94 when my car was only a month old, I slammed the fuel pedal to the floor and the little ball at the end of the cable broke right thru the plastic piece that inserts in the top of the pedal lever. A call to GM road service and my car was towed to the dealer and repaired. Picked the car up and within 24 hours it was towed back because the new cable had broke. This time the service dept. realized they needed a "better mousetrap" and they replaced the cable and supposedly rigged up a small washer or something behind the little ball to have the same effect as trying to "suck a golf ball through a water hose." Here it is 10 years later and my size 13 foot hasn't managed to break it since. Hammer |

Hammer-must be a design flaw. Do you know how they got a washer between the cable and the ball?
This is this is the first time I've ever heard of this happening either. See cruise control is good for something in a race car. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Using the camaro parts pdf the throttle cable for '94-'96 non-traction control cars lists for $21. Hopefully I can get one by friday-if not I'll figure something else out. |

I've only seen one throttle related failure...one of our guys broke his pedal! We decided it was because he had bent it to get better heel and toe positioning and must have cracked the lever in the process.

Well I did a search on CamaroZ28.com to see if any other LT1'ers had broken it. There were a few other reports of people having the pedal break in the same way. The plastic retainer in the lever is evidently a weak spot.
I'm going to try and get a new one tomorrow. '94-'96 non-TCS LT1 throttle cable 12550676 '93 & '97 non-TCS are different. Here's a parts pdf for '93-'02 F-body' if anyone needs it. http://www.engh.com/camaross/misc/partsman...al/default.aspx |
