Why are the crate motor prices for the LT1 and the LS1 almost identical? I don't get it.

Limited production on the LT1 motors? I'm not sure.

Keith you looking for a whole motor or shortblock? (GM) I have a good source for genuine GM shortblocks. 4-bolt. cheap.

At this point I am simply evaluating options, their relative merits and their relative costs. Since I will be running CMC, I new GM crate LT1 would be the best choice. It has been my observation that rebuilt motors die more often than factory new and (while there are examples to the contrary) the GM sourced, new motors seem to routinely live well beyond 100,000 miles while being pounded... So I am evaluating new engines, complete rebuilt engines, used engines and rebuilding my engine. One I fully grasp each choice and it's cost, I will make a decision on which way to go.

Keith you are so right about factory motors taking abuse. I will pay the extra money to have a GM replacement engine rather then having someone local rebuild it cheaper. I've always had oil burning problems on motors that I've had rebuilt and it usually starts around 50k, while the original went well beyond that. It's nice to know that a factory replacement motor for my truck is only $2k.

Don't know if they have LT4's in stock or if they list them not realizing that they aren't available... The link points specifically to the GM Crate motor section of the website...

It must be so expensive because of the block. LT1's weren't made that long. Besides all the internal parts are standard SBC pieces. The block and the heads must be driving up the price. The internals for an LT1 should be much cheaper than an LS1.

No flaming please, I'd much rather own an LS1. Most other LT1 owners would too, but won't admit it. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

The LT1 internal dimensions may be the same as a garden variety crate "Goodwrench" 175 hp smog engine, but I don't think the parts are the same. The PM rods, hyper-whatever pistons, etc all cost more. Are they milking it? Sure! The LS1 and LT1 are both sold for hot rodding applications as well as stock replacement. In other words, they are expensive because the market will bear it.
