The upper mounting hat/stud on one of my front Konis is toast. It looks like something salvaged from an old shipwreck. When I sprayed WD40 on it (no wrench involved) the nut started crumbling. The stud was no better, and it was also rusted solid in the upper rubber and steel mount.

However, the rest of the shock is still good, and I was able to get the hat off fairly easily once I had cut it out of the upper mount (not a fun job).

Koni in Cincinnati is looking for a hat for me (should know by Thursday afternoon) but even if they find one I wouldn't mind picking up a spare.

If you have a spare hat that has already been removed from the shock that would be cheaper to ship, but as long as the hat (including threads!) is good and not rusty I don't care if it's attached to a total junk shock.

Did you try calling truechoice? If they have it, I can run by and get it and send it to you (being out of state, you'll avoid tax though).

I'll give them a call. Thanks.

Update: Truechoice was not much help. They did offer to make something custom for me if I supply the dimensions, but they don't stock the replacements parts.

I had to replace one as well. I called Koni directly and they sold me the part. $20 if I remember right.

That's what I did, but "the guy" was already gone for the day. I should know by this afternoon if they have one.

However, I am out of time and need to pursue multiple avenues. If I end up with a spare or two that's OK.

And the answer was, 6+ weeks to get a new part from Europe.

So, that's $226 for one new shock. I want to keep it balanced side-to-side, so I'll be removing the $20 part I need from the brand new shock and installing it on my rusty old shock. At least I'll have a spare shock body if one starts leaking or something. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Look on the bright side - at least you got the new shock before the price increase!

Wow, that sucks. I'm not sure, but I think they actually removed the one they sold me from a shock they had in stock. Then ordered a new one and put their shock back together when the new one arrived. My "new" one had a hex shaped mark on the under side just the size of the jam nut.

I don't know if they would have done that or not - Koni said they won't have any SAs in stock until sometime next week.

Luckily Tirerack had shocks in stock, as well as the rubber & steel upper mount that I had to destroy to get the shock out. Steve Jackson expedited them for me (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif)

Sean,

You asked if I had any SA's here... I did not. But I could have drop-shipped you some my supplier in Dayton OH right then and there. I felt it nuts to do that since you shocks themselves were fine if you could just procure the hat from Koni......

I guess that's what I get for trying to do right thing. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
I guess I should have sold the shocks in the first place since you ended up buying some anyway. For the record, just because I don't have something here doesn't mean I can't get it to you via a drop-ship if it's an emergency. My supplier in Ohio has 8 sets of fronts. My CA supplier has 4, and a company I deal with in NY has 4 as well.

I suppose what I'm saying is that once you couldn't procure the hat, you could have called me back. I'd have gotten you shocks, no problem...... Clearly a mis-understanding that I had to have something in hand to get them there. I don't make a habit of sending parts out until the credit card payment clears and gets deposited in my account (only because it's easier to use your money for your parts) but you've been a good customer and an emergency situation like this, I'd have happily reallocated some funds and shipped some out however you wanted (overnight, etc.).

I only mention this because I see that I miss a lot of business because folks don't ask, or assume. I know there are a lot of clutches, seats, and headers on cars here that I could have sold and made some money for myself, but also probably could have saved some for you guys too....

Please ask. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

BTW, I'm not upset at anyone but myself. I didn't want to come across as wanting to sell you dampers if you didn't need them. Maybe I should have......

Sorry Sam, I just misunderstood. I appreciate and pursued your tip about calling Koni for the hats, and I appreciate the brake parts YOU expedited.

Koni said they didn't have the part, and said there wouldn't be any more shocks in until Tuesday. Somehow I thought your Koni supplier in Ohio was Koni in Ohio (looking back, I think you did say Dayton vs Cinci ... I can only plead premature senility) but you raise a fair point. I should have called back to double check instead of assuming - you DID turn away the sale to help me try to find a cheaper alternative first.

Incidentally, I bought one shock and two new mounts, not a pair of shocks. I may regret this later, but since my shocks are still good I'm just going to swap the hat from the new shock onto the old shock and shelve my new spare. I didn't want to spring for two.

That's part of why you get a lot of word-of-mouth business (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
