[ *** Sunday March 18 -- still looking for a complete upgrade! *** ]
I'm looking for a complete LS1 brake upgrade kit (spindles, rotors, calipers and brackets. I don't need useable pads, and the hubs would be nice to have but optional ... I can find an incomplete and somewhat expensive kit from Billy Graham's salvage and eBay doesn't come up with anything good right now that will ship to Canada (or that doesn't require me to pay by money order). Anyone have a kit for sale? Thanks! Please post here or send me a pm. ... and this all started when I pulled my entire front suspension for some detailing ... then the little gears in my head started turning and now I already own a set of Hawk HP+ pads, but still need the rest of the upgrade! Oh yes, and I've run out of brakes on the track twice so far. Either I need to smarten up (I wish ...) or I need a bit more brakes. -- Nik; mailto:maddrtwinkletoes@shaw.ca Black 1995 Z28 TT (nearing completion ...) Thanks for the lead!
I called them, they have a set and I am waiting for a shipping quote from Scott, since their price is reasonable. Thanks again! Any other suggestions in the meantime? Nik -- Black 1995 Z28 TT (nearing completion) |

Don't buy anything from those guys (Tennesse Auto)!
They do a horrible job of packing! All they care about is getting your money. I bought some parts from them and half of the contents were damage. There was absolutely no packing material. And when I called them to complain Scott, one of the mgr. just gave me the jerk job. Avoid those guys. Kevin |

Hmm, that's not great to hear, especially since I have to get the stuff shipped to Canada...
Any other pro/cons with Tennessee Auto, or any other leads on an LS1 brake upgrade? Nik -- Black 1995 Z28 TT (nearing completion ...) |

Hey, thanks for the reply!
I would need these fairly soon, as I've already yanked out my front suspension. I'd say within 2 weeks tops. Re: Baer/Alcon kit--will you be selling your *** spindles ***? Those are the most important parts right now. |

I'm sorry, but I'm such a mechanical moron I'm not even sure about the nomenclature of parts I got. Anyone got any pics I can point to? (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

The spindle is the large chunk of cast iron that the bearings and everything is bolted too (the "long" section that everything is mounted on). You will have spare spindles (though I might keep the extra bearings, but that's just me. They cost more to replace than most people sell the whole LS1 setup for. RedHardSupra,
I kinda agree with trackbird advice re: keeping hubs/extra bearings, though I'd love to get those, too. ;-) Can you send me a pic of *what* you have and when it could be available by? I am still hunting around like a bunny rabbit on crack ... (that's probably the wrong image to conjure up ... ;-) Cheers! Nik |

ok, so i did know what spindles are, yey!
sure, i can take pics at lunch... Trackbird, why would you keep this stuff? my car is 78k miles old, so i usually tend to replace/upgrade stuff as upgrades happen. If you sent me the full replacement, why would i want to keep old beat up spares? i gotta be missing some understanding here... |

Since I didn't run those brakes and I know they have seen some use. I can't swear that the bearings in them are as good as the ones that are currently on your car and working properly. Meaning, if you pull yours and sell them and install these (and then find bad bearings), you could be buying new bearings at $150-ish to well over $200 each (I'd keep your working spares). That's all I was saying. These bearings wear out and break, spares are never a bad thing. |

Not to try and distract from you guys' discussion here, but can you make sure the "beat up old spares" are actually useable?
I.e. spindles not bent (measure length to verify), rotors and calipers/caliper brackets in good shape, etc. I gotta put this stuff on my car once it arrives, you know! ;-) I'm happy to get the kit without the hubs/bearings. I just need everything else to be in good shape. Cheers, and thanks, Nik |

Nik,
The only way to really verify that a spindle is straight is to put it on an alignment rack and do a camber sweep. Or that's the only way I'm familiar with. Marcin (Redhardsupra) has a very nice, clean car and I'd suspect that he has straight spindles on there (but nothing it ever 100% assured). I was using "Beat up old spares" to make a point. That's all. |

Yup, that's what I figured. I just thought I'd say it out loud, too.
I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of what Marcin has! Nik -- Black 1995 Z28 TT (nearing completion) |

sorry guys, life got in the way and i wasn't able to have time for pics or even to get a camera. i'll try to organize it over the weekend. what do you want me to snap pics of? my car is still partially in snow, and it's ugly out, so i'm not taking off wheels or anything in this weather. i can only take pics of all the stuff Trackbird sent me (it's in boxes in my basement for now waiting for a better weather).

No sense taking pics of something you won't be getting rid of. I'd love to see pics of your installed new brakes, though!
What sort of timeframe are we talking about for your old brakes? As mentioned before, I need these within about two weeks tops. If your car is still under snow, this might not work out that well. Can you let me know? Cheers, Nik |

today we had a first nice sunny day without snow on the ground, but that lasted half a day, and i think we got a chance of snow in the middle of the night. hopefully mother nature is gonna cut this crap out, cause this ain't funny anymore.
i think i'm gonna do it toward the end of this upcoming week, i got some parts coming in this wednesday, so hopefully i'll be able to drop my car off for all the new mods on thursday. unless it's gonna get extra cold, in which case, driving around on 315 wide KD's is not such a good idea. i really want my car to be done finally, so i don't ever have to buy parts or have downtime again (yea, right). i'll keep you posted, thanks for the patience with me |

Those could have been my words! I had a little mishap at the track last June (got lucky and lost pretty much just some paint off the nose) and used that as a good reason to do the custom twin turbo install I had been collecting parts for during the last 2 years. It's now 9 months later and I am doing a partial undercar detail and a brake upgrade to boot, now that the turbo setup is complete and final fitted (but yanked out again for detailing ...)! But the turbo setup nickled and dimed me to death, once the big stuff was bought.
If you can pull this stuff by end of this week and have it shipped to me, that might work. Let's stay in touch. Cheers, and thanks, and good luck! Nik -- Black 1995 Z28 TT (nearing completion ... sort of!) |
