Hey guys, i was thinking about getting a pair of cheap tires and rims and mounting 'em out back just to play around with. Ya know, beat the crap outta them cuz they cost 50 bucks a piece. Any good suggestions? I was thinking it'd be fun to put something really small on back there so i'd get a ton of oversteer. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

May I respectfully suggest you to find another forum then? Try google.com for "drifting". Drifting isn't something members here take part in.

As Rob stated, we are pretty much allergic to drifting here. If you want to learn the limits of the vehicle at a slower pace, I'd suggest a set of 4 "skinny" tires and put them on all four corners, then you can work on the cars balance and the driver. However, the stock tires are "slippery enough" with the weight and HP that these cars make. So, if you are wanting to get a feel for the balance of the car for autocrossing or track use, we can possibly help, if it's drifting you seek, I'm sure there are entire forums dedicated to it, but this is not one of them. :drive: |

Drifting is not about using cheap ass tire to loose traction. Its the way the car's suspension is set up. If you have ever seen any of the D1 series, all the cars are using race rubber for ultimate traction and steering control. If you look at how they have the AE86's set up for drifting, you'll notice that on a 1700lbs car it has 250# springs up front with 500-600# springs out back. Thats what makes the car 'tail happy'. Cheap tires are just going to make it that much easier to find a drainage ditch on the side of the road. |

yea, i'm not the biggest fan of drifting, too much style not enough speed. I'm a gripper born and bred, but unfortunately i'm also a broke college student on a really tight budget, because of this i can't pay 200 bucks a tire for quality meats on a regular basis. I don't mind going a little slower because right now i'm just trying to get SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME

Seat time is something entirely different. What kind of seat time? Autocross, I'm guessing?

I feel ya on the broke college student thing. I'm in the same position. In the wise words of Trackbird, start autoxing on street tires as that will help you learn to control the vehicle better, and then move into a set of race tires when money and experience allow. Don't pick up a set of cheap, slick rear tires... just remember: Mondo Dorifto = BAD.

I'll see your set of 4 snow tires and raise you one Z28 hatch for rear end excursions into solid objects. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

See if your local AX club has any sites on sealed asphalt. We have a site like that, and it's slippery as hell, but your tires last forever. Perfect for what you want to do. Just run your street tires through the AX course and practice modualting the throttle to "feel out" where the grip threshold is .

get a set of s10 wheels/tires from the junk yard, soak them in bleach for a night, and then go have your fun. the bleach herdens the rubber making it burn easier and smoke like crazy...a buddy of mine convinced me to do it just for pix. so i did, it was fun until the tires blew and we had to push the car onto 2 by 12's and jack it up, replace the wheels with my good ones.

Sorry Garrett. Not inferring anything about preferences. When I read that, it just struck me funny and thought I might suggest you watch your phraseology. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

LMAO, no worries Bill. It was quite funny. You actually caught me in a quite shameless plug in yet another attempt to sell the Z28 hatch that's currently sitting in my garage. Now that I've found I can't get rid of it, I'm quite desperate. Hah.
