Have any of you heard of a Hurst Camaro? A buddy saw a Camaro with subtle Hurst emblems under the SS, or Z-28 emblems on the side and rear. It was a black 4th gen. with Florida tags. I don't recall GM offering it, but my knowledge isn't that good. Maybe a dealer option, or a well done owner modification?

Yes, I believe they did build a few of them. It's been a while since I've seen the info, but they were black and gold or black (I forget which) and they did exist. It's like the "Comp T/A" Trans Am's (aftermarket conversion, limited production run, etc).

I'm pretty sure they were built by LPE. They are pretty neat cars.

the only Hurst fourth gen that I am aware of is the Hurst Hauler and the 10th anniversary Firehawks that were black with gold stripes and rims. the hauler was a trans am with a cargo style hatch, think 79 TA K type if you know what that is.
typically those hurst tags you saw on the camaro are dealer/owner addons and its just because they have a hurst shifter, nothing else. |

Did a little searching and there WAS a "Hurst Firebird" in 1998. It was the 40th anniversary of Hurst shifters and apparently, there were a few commemerative cars built by LPE. No Camaros though.

Lingenfelter did a very limited run of Hurst Firebirds in 97 & 98. There were never any 4th gen Hurst Camaros that could be ordered through GM. Not sure about other gens, but I don't recall any, and of course, that doesn't mean a dealer couldn't have done a "Hurst" edition, but I'd imagine they'd run into licensing issues with the name, so I'd guess it's an owner modified car if it is a Camaro.

Here's a whole story about the end of Camaro/Firebird. Only thing I could find was: the 35th Anniversary Model came with a (optional) Hurst Shifter... |

The Hurst shifters were an available option as early as the mid 90s the Firehawk/SS, and were also optional on later standard Formula/TAs/Z28s.

My car was a factory Hurst shifter car, but the Hurst Firebirds are something different. I believe one of the guys at Jegs owns one.

I think they only made 7 Hurst Firehawks. They were black with gold stripes. They went for about $50k.I think they only made 7 because of tranny problems.

There were a few more than 7 made, but not many more. That number sounds about right for the 98 Hurst Firebird, but I think the 97 production was about 10-20. They used to have all the details on the Lingenfelter site, but apparently they've deleted it all off the site now. Pricing new was just under $50K, and it included gold stripes down the length of the car, ported heads and a cam, and some other peformance goodies. They were available only in a six speed with Hurst shifter (duh). Also, if I remember correctly, the 97s were Formulas only, and the 98s were TAs. Both years were WS-6 based cars. They were rated at 350HP@6000 and 375TQ@4500. Car & Driver got a 0-60 of 4.7 and a 1/4 of 13.1@111.
