Anyone from Chicago? Options

Some of you know I flew into Chicago last week for a job interview.

Things have been going very well for me recently (other than the negative money issue)

So is there anyone in the Chicago area that wouldn't mind having a race trailer (24') stored on their property? I would prefer to find a place where I can store all my stuff with me, but I dunno if that is quite possible yet.

Long-term [over a year] or Short-term [couple weeks/months]?

I can talk to my boss to see if he's lend some space behind the shop to store it on the short term, but long-term is probably out. The shop is in Bedford Park, IL. @ approx. 65th St and Austin Ave.

Ditto that - don't do it. I left Dixieland 7 years ago and have been trying to get back every since. You WILL regret it. Winters suck, cost of living is high (groceries, gas, taxes, tollways, real estate, etc.). The only redeeming factor is an awesome amount of automotive activity in the form of dragstrips, AX, track days, and local car clubs (mfba for one (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ).

Agreed. If I ever get my ass in gear and get back to college, the first thing I'm looking for is a job away from Chicagoland.

I don't even like downtown [alright, I HATE downtown], which is most people's redeeming factor.

Well....

First of all.... I'm currently in the middle of nowhere in NY (I wasn't born in NY and have the passport to prove it)

I really enjoyed downtown Chicago (this coming from someone who isn't city folk)
I met a girl from Chicago before my plane even touched down
The people are very friendly
The company I interviewed with treats their employees really well...

Plus it is very close to Peru and cuts down half my distance to Topeka.

So I don't see the downside

Aaron if you don't find something I do have a place. It damn secure, and I can pretty much leave it there all year. We could even store it in the winter there.

It would be about 2-2.5hours away from you, right off I80/90.


Man I hope this works out for you. It'll be SO, SO, SO, much easier to get seat time in a Z06 when you are that close.

Traffic is not bad in LA and it wasn't bad in Chicago. It was however horrendous in DC.

I was looking at staying on the Indiana side of the city (the company is in Indiana)

I was looking into staying 30min-1hr east of the city to begin with. The monkey wrench being the girl on the other side of the city.....Of course I need to get a job offer... but I hope that is imminent.

Well, I think you are looking at it through rose colored glasses. I have lived in 6 different states ( LA, TX, CA, IN, SC, IL) and traveled to most of the major cities in the US with the exception of the NW, Miami, and Boston. I would agree the 3 with the worst traffic are Chicago, LA, and NYC. I've heard Boston is just as bad. DC can't hold a candle to Chicago. If it wasn't bad the day you were here you were lucky. Wrong day or wrong time of day it can back up for 40-50 miles - no joke. Unfortunately those wrong times of day come far too often.

If you can, stay in Indiana. Taxes are lower and the politics are not as screwed up.

It does sound like the cost of living may be the only downside for you from where you are coming from - the upside being the excellent amount of automotive stuff here.

If your job is in Indiana, live there. You don't really want to be commuting their everyday. I80/94 has been screwed up ever since I can remember, even when it's not under construction. It does have it's good days, but I've had people come from NW Indiana to buy parts I had for sale and if they're coming during rush hour, it takes anywhere from 1-2.5 hours. It should be about 30 minutes if traffic wasn't shitty. Besides, like timyerby said, cost of living will be lower and it seems like the standard of living is the same.

I live 20 miles from work [Homer Glen, IL to Bedford Park, IL] and it usually takes about an hour to get there.

I went to the University of Illinios: Chicago for a semester. I had an 8am Chemistry lab and had to leave my house at 5:30 to make it there on time and it was only a 5-10 minute walk once I parked. That's the joy of driving into the city from the suburbs. 2+ hours to go 30 miles.
