Don't know if anyone else here is insured through USAA, but I was reading through my latest policy renewal, and wasn't entirely happy to see the following:

QUOTE
The following definitions are added:

Driving contest or challenge includes, but is not limited to:

1. A competition against other people, vehicles, or time; or

2. An activity that challenges the speed or handling characteristics of a vehicle, or improves or demonstrates driving skills, provided the activity occurs on a track or course that is closed from nonparticipants.

Used to be, they only excluded "participation in or practice for any speed contest", meaning that driving schools, HPDE, and other non-competitive events were still covered. I'm no lawyer, but I don't see a lot of wiggle room in #2.

I guess I'll either be investigating supplemental insurance, or just using the old '83 T/A instead of my newer cars for most track days.

I don't see the wiggle in there either. I am always surprised when anyone's policy covers "schools" as it is.

I was told by a couple of the local Porsche guys that you can buy special insurance for HDPE's.

I think I'd rather buy the modified chassis sitting on the road near me and throw in a cheapo 350 SBC, tranny and 2nd seat to use for HDPE's.

I have seen policies available for lapping days. There was a pile of brochures at Beaver Run the last time I was there, but I can't remember the name of the company...

DE insurance is pretty expensive. If you can't afford to wreck it, don't drive it in a DE. That said, I think if you are careful, the chances that you would wreck your car in a DE are low, but do exist.

Yeah, but when you're cornering in the toe of the boot and the Porche in front of you slides almost full sideways there ain't exactly much you can do. No matter how careful you are you just can't avoid certain things. In the Esses at the Glen it narrows down *alot*.

So that being said that modified chassis is looking pretty good to me, too bad I don't have any moeny.

I did an online quote and this is what it came back with $405.00 a year. I figured the car is worth 24k(about 22-23k actually I'm overestimating) with 3k in upgrades so far. So the total insured price is 27,000. I think it is not Bad consider paying a few thousands to fix the car if you wreck or $405 covering all events for a year (I guess the more events the better the value) However you will need to check the details in the policy since open track days will most likely not be covered. How many HPDE are there a year In and area let's say NE/Ohio for instance?

How can you challenge an inanimate object? HPDE's are more of a challenge for the driver, since a non living specimen can't respond to a challenge.

According to this, feel free to do it on any street that has other cars and/or pedestrians. THAT seems to be OK... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)
