Pontiac Firebird with LS1, floater 9", and Tremec Magnum T56 specifically built for NASA's American Iron road-race series.

This car started life as a 1994 Firebird Formula. In 2008, I purchased it and made it a track-only car. In 2010, I began racing it in American Iron, and it quickly received the LS1 facelift (and tail-lights), as well as the LS1 engine. The graphics that you see are paint, not a vinyl wrap. I have CAD files for paint mask templates, which will go with the car, or we can discuss a repaint in a single-color.

This Firebird has been built with safety as my primary goal, and competitiveness as a close second. Very little expense has been saved in the pursuit of either goal. The seat has been moved back against the main hoop, and all controls relocated rearward because of it. This gives maximum room for a window exit (and in fact I never open the doors unless I'm cleaning or maintaining the car). The main cage bars were bent by Alan Blaine, and installed by Fulcrum Aeroworks. The main structure is 1.75" diameter, .120 wall. Non-required bars are .090 thick. Cage has NASCAR bars on both sides.

Modifications:

  • AST double adjustable coil-over shocks with remote-mounted reservoirs on all 4 corners
  • 2001 Camaro LS6 block and intake, built and balanced by HKE racing engines.
    • Comp Cam valve springs
    • LS7 lifters
    • ARP head studs and rod bolts
    • Shortened LS3 valves
    • SCAT 4340 rods, Wiseco K398X3903 pistons
    • Oil pan baffle with trap-doors
    • Currently detuned to 322 HP/350 TQ with 6900 rpm redline (no restrictors, all in PCM)
  • Custom-built Ford 9" axle assembly with floater hubs, 4 piston rear brakes and 11.25" brake rotors. All parts from Coleman racing are easily sourced/replaced
  • Tremec Magnum T56 transmission with .80 5th gear ratio. Rated for 700 ft-lb torque (TUET10009)
  • Custom 3" aluminum driveshaft (shortened for longer T56 magnum)
  • Wildwood 6 Piston front brakes and 13" two-piece rotors
  • 3 full sets of Enkei 17" wheels (two sets with Toyo RR's, one set with RA1's).
  • Rrsusp.com C5 front hub kit (uses SKF race bearings from Corvette)
  • Full carbon-fiber wing built and installed by Fulcrum Aeroworks (now ajhartmanracing.com)
  • Aluminum splitter with steel frame, made in 3 sections for easy repairs from Fulcrum Aeroworks
  • Custom built crash bar behind front bumper to allow front-breather conversion
  • Custom built aluminum Radiator inlet duct
  • Fiberglass TransAm ram air hood, lift-off with 5 hood pins
  • Stranoparts.com 35mm hollow front sway bar
  • C5 Z06 ABS system, relocated to passenger floor board (this is currently disabled with the new 9" rear end, as I haven't finished the ABS reluctor ring design. Buyer will get the original 4 channel 10 bolt rear end, which allows the ABS system to work. Buyer will also get design files for floater ABS reluctor rings)
  • Tilton overhung brake/clutch pedal setup with remote adjusting balance bar
  • Custom designed remote shift linkage
  • Ultrashield driver seat with halo
  • Ultrashield passenger seat (no halo)
  • Woodward lightweight and collapsible steering column with momo steering wheel
  • Fays2 watts link (eliminates factory panhard bar, and allows you to set the roll-center height)
  • UMI road race k-member
  • UMI rear lower control arms
  • Custom paint job, painted with easily obtained single-stage paint from Summit Racing
  • Cool suit cooler (would like to keep my shirt)
  • Lexan front windshield, molded with anti-scratch and anti-fog coating
  • Lexan rear window (not installed on car – still has glass rear window).
  • Unbalanced Engineering decoupled torque-arm, modified for 9" (have 10-bolt arm also, but it's a bit bent)
  • 3 QT accusump and oil cooler with thermostatic fan
Car has won 6 races, and held a track record at NOLA for a couple of years. It normally finishes in the front pack.

I love this car, and still enjoy racing, but I'm ready to move on from racing (or rather my wife is ready for me to move on). I don't need to sell it, so don't make a ridiculous offer. I intend to continue to race it until it finds a new home. Any questions, please email jim {at} design-base {dot} net, or PM me and I'll send you my phone number.

Asking $17,000 obo

I have a 2006 Pace 20' enclosed trailer and a 2012 Chevy diesel Silverado that could be worked into the deal.

What width are the NT03s, and various Toyos??

What is the 'wet' weight (sans driver)?

I like the Motul catch can. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/2thumbs.gif)

Wheels are 17x9.5, if memory serves. All tires are 275/40/17

Motul can was a temporary solution. It's actually still on the car, but I have a new can to install.

Car was 3180 with my 200# butt before the 9" install. I actually don't remember what it's at now. If you're interested in the car, I can certainly find out. I have lexan to replace the rear glass, which I believe will make up for the 9" weight.

Car is still for sale. Offering a limited time price before I take the engine out for a refresh, at $13,500 (firm).

The engine has excessive blow-by, and is both burning oil and pushing excessive amounts of oil out of the catch can.
