Do a Google search on Raptor Performance. I bought one of their shift lights and I love it. It's small {I installed mine in the windo defroster vent in the A piller molding} and it's bright. It's also self contained and it's got pots that you use to adjust the target rpm instead of having a second module or having to buy different chips. They are fairly cheap too, something like 70-80 bucks and come in a crapload of different colors.
I was going to buy a Harlan shift light but I noticed that he was always covered up and it might take weeks to get it. The Raptor took something like four days. I'll try to find a link for you. Here ya go- http://www.raptorperformance.com/ This post has been edited by Judd: Aug 21 2005, 04:49 PM |

That Proform looks like a knock off of the AutoMeter ProShift Lite that I have. The nice thing about the AutoMeter light is it has little "pills" that you can plug in to change the shift rpm. These pills are visible from the front of the light and clearly labled, so you always know what rpm the light is set to. I have mine set to 6800 rpm, but my motor revs so quick with the aluminum flywheel that it's usually on the rev limiter at 7000 rpm before I can get off the gas.

I've got a Raptor and a Harlan. The Raptor is so easy to use and gets my recommendation for consideration.

Yes the Raptor looks very nice, and will probably end up with one. But that LG unit would be the best if you could adjust each color light to a different rpm.

What's wrong with the rev limiter?
I bought two SLs. Never installed either. 6500 rpm rev limit on the F Body. When I hit it I am reminded to shift. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I don't even have one on my race car. Same thing: MSD rpm pill of 6k. Hit it I shift. I guess I don't get it. If there's an opertable rev limiter no need to worry about engine. If you're doing the 1/4 for money or whatever on an occassional basis, maybe. Bottom line: Not worth the effort. steve This post has been edited by steve-d: Aug 21 2005, 11:57 PM |

I have a Harlan shift light. It keeps me in check when I'm chasing someone down. I think it's set at 6400rpm, but under normals circumstances I shift in the 6000 range.

Right now i shift by sound, and get it right 4 out of 5 time's. But that's like 3 or so missed shift's per lap at BRP :drive: Beside a lt1 make's no power above 5t rpm's right! Or am i wrong on this one? |

I bought a Harlan shift light for my CMC car.
A few days later, an autometer tach came on the board for sale and had shift lite attached and was controlled by the tach. So, I never installed the Harlan shift Light. I still have it and would let it go for $50. It appears he is no longer making them ... http://www.harlan-engineering.com/ Here's an install page ... http://www.installuniversity.com/install_u...ght_install.htm |

Proform for my car.
Easily adjusted without the 'pill'. ... and I'd have to believe that your HP curve is on the decline after 5K. Maybe someone here has a dyno sheet for the LT1. It'd be worth the effort to dyno, if you have a shop nearby, so you'd know. I spun the bearings on my L98 thinking it rev'd up into the 5K range and provided something for it. The dyno sheet told me different. |

I've also used the Proform shift light for about three years now, no complaints.

(IMG:http://www.jonaadland.com/NewPics3/Baseline.JPG) That's with headers/coldair, etc. Yes, power peaks and declines soon after 5K. But you're going to be a lot faster shifting around 6K. I guess I disagree with Steve. A shift light was one of the favorite things I've done. I can keep my eyes on the track and shift where I want everytime. The rev limiters on these cars is a pretty damn rough thing to be doing to your engine several times a lap--and hitting it slows you down. Shifting 3-400 RPM earlier than necessary to avoid hitting it slows you down too. |

Just curious, at what rpm does the stock rev limt kick in on a stock '93 or '94 LT1? My wife doesn't let me get close to it in her LT1 car, and I have an LS1 (which lives on it's 7000 rpm rev limiter, LOL.)
Also, how harsh is the LT1 rev limit? The LS1 rev limit doesn't seem that bad. This post has been edited by Cal: Aug 22 2005, 08:48 PM |

Cal, I dunno much about the LT1 limiter, but I wouldn't want to be hitting the LS1 limiter too much myself. I only tapped it once on the drag strip and I bent a pushrod. A friend of mine also bent a pushrod by hitting the rev limiter, much harder than I did... and his was bent into an S. Granted, that's not major damage, but it sure is a pain in the ass to be swapping pushrods all the time. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I have a Raptor shiftlight mounted high to my a-pillar and focused right into my eyes. I can look straight ahead and shift without being distracted. It flutters as you approach the set point and goes solid at the set point. The raptor is small, bright, and easily programmable. Unlike the Harlan it's also readily available.
I don't know why people put them in the vent-I'd rather have it at eye level pointed right as me as I look ahead. |
