What class are you in Guy?

My car is running great. Unfortunately the speedometer decided to stop working in the 2-years it sat with the battery out. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Going to pull the cluster when I finish work today. Hoping that a little corrosion on the pin or moving the needle by hand will get it working again. I hate to have to drive by tach...

Glad to see you back Chuck. I will again run the GT3 (125) class in my fairly stock '99 SS. I will tow out to Sanderson Wed of next week. And don't worry about the speedo, just use the GPS.

I currently do not have GPS. What would you suggest, and how can it be mounted? I don't think handhelds are legal, and I don't want to drill.

GPS would be awesome ... I can see pinpointing the start and finish lines as the trip and then bring up the trip data, you can see ETA, AVG. speed, top speed ... all kinds of data.

You can pick up a Garmin C330 for about $150.

They come with a suction cup mount for the windshield.

Mitch's idea is a good one. Find one that suction cups to the windshield.

I think your navigator can hold one. I run two GPS's and my navigator holds his GPS. The GPS I read is in a mount that is vecro'd to the dash near the pillar and all it displays is current speed and average speed. I let the navigator tell me the rest of the poop.

A helpful hint. Take a stop watch and program it as a countdown clock. Attach it so you can read it easily. Start it as the Christmas tree goes green and as you get near the finish line (quarter mile or so out) run off of it as it counts toward zero.

I did not realize it could be suction cupped to the windshield. Ya'all made my day! I was stressing over "do I sent it to Granatelli and hope it comes back in time"...

The only other things needing attention are I need to install the shoulder harnesses (the lowers are in), and am having a little exhaust work done tomorrow. I want to get it on a dyno, but the two closest to me haven't had time yesterday or today.

A couple of hints from someone that has been there in the past....

Your GPS needs to read tenths of a mile average speed over 100mph. Many of the new ones DO NOT. I have found most of the other GPS functions useless, they just do not update quickly enough to make you competitive even though I installed exterior antennas on both to make them update more often.

About stop watches/timers. I run 2-- even when I ran solo. BOTH THE SAME. It is hard enough trying to remember different buttons. Get a stopwatch that does splits. On your course notes mark landmarks that can be seen from a mile or so away and write the corresponding time you *should* be there next to the landmark on the notes. Take a split reading and compare it to your target time and then figure of you are fast or slow. The closer to the finish--the more landmarks you need.

Figure both legs together as far as your time. That way when you get to Sanderson and turn around, if you are fast or slow, you do not need to re-figure the northbound times. So the first time check 2 minutes north out of Sanderson would be the cumulative since you left Ft Stockton -- not since you left Sanderson.

Zero out the GPS when they stage you. When the light flashes at the line for you to go, hit the buttons on your watches and verify you have two good timers.

I mounted one GPS on the A pillar and one on a flexible mount in the center of the dash. Verify you can see them if the sun is glaring. I mounted both stop watches via velcro on the center of the steering wheel. I can punch the buttons with my hands on the wheel.
