I thought a father's worst nightmare is when his daughter brings home a dirtbag boyfriend...
...who by the way drives a POS Honda. Yea my 2 yr old daugher broke my heart a few weeks ago. She said she wanted to drive me to work. In the early 90's, there was an intern at work that SEEMED like a nice girl. Then she told us that before she was old enough to drive, her father bought an MGA for her and did a beautiful, painstaking restoration job on it. She told him she wanted a Buick instead. She got the Buick, and Dad kept the MGA.
My five year old daughter told me yesterday that when she's old enough for a real car, she wants a race car that can be driven on the road too. It has to have lots of vrooooom. In a somewhat related twist, I was replacing the head gasket on my niece's Plymouth Acclaim. I test drove it, and got some funny looks, then drove it to work and had people laughing when they passed it. Why? She had 2 bumper stickers on the rear..."Yield to the Princess" and "Future Queen". I didn't drive it after that.

I've got 1-year-old twins, and I'm already torn over what to buy. Do I get an old-school car so that they can learn to take care of a car? I had a 66 Mustang in 1995 (first car). It was good, but things went wrong. Learned a lot about cars and how to keep them running. Or, do I get a nice, safe car with airbags/abs/etc.? Still don't know. |

True - I just can't imagine giving a 15 year old an LS/LT. My first Camaro was the 1995 Camaro. It had the puny 3.4L. I almost killed myself in that thing a hundred times over. I wouldn't be here if I'd had the Z-28. I'd be splattered in a ravine somewhere west of Austin.
Now, the little 2000 Firebird convertible with the 3.8 is an option. Good power, just nothing crazy. Sexy as hell, too. Navy blue, tan top, tan leather, chrome wheels. Wife hated when I traded it for the Trans Am. I never looked back. |

Mitch, tell her to test drive a new Malibu if she likes the Camry. My cousin bought a new Malibu last year and I was seriously surprised. The car is very nice and the pickup is surprising for a 4 banger because of the 6 speed automatic trans. She loves the car too.

I'm kinda on the other side of this discussion, but I'll give my experience.
My father and I built up a 90 C1500 just before I got my license. We rebuilt the small block, lowered it, nice wheels, had it painted, etc and I drove it in high school. My sister drove my father's 93 XJ6 Jag after he had it for a few years. I later drove that a year in college. Both it and the truck were great first cars. Then I bought a third gen with the money from selling the Jag. About a month ago I was in a wreck with the third gen a month after my parents had it painted as a college graduation present. I ended up getting an insurance check and selling the car to a guy who is fixing it up with his son...lucky kid! My mother is a little sad I sold it, but she didn't tell me that until afterwards... Now I have a 96 bmw 318ti that is going to be my new auto-x/dd car. |
