F-Body Road Racing and Autocross Forums _ General Discussion _ looking for new toy... what your recommendations ?

Posted by: Eugenio_SS May 23 2017, 07:39 PM

As title says.
Looking for a new toy. Any choice would be in Manual Transmission only (don't want pdk/auto)

Thinking:

What's your opinion ?

Use: mainly track, a bit of street (not thinking on getting trailer)

Might consider a smaller cat such as a cayman gt4
But afraid lacks power

Posted by: BumpaD_Z28 May 23 2017, 11:51 PM

I always been a GM guy but both the 911 GT3 and Cayman GT are AWESOME ! ... BUT the Cayman is down on power sad.gif

Posted by: GCrites80s May 24 2017, 01:06 AM

Caymans are also quite expensive to add power to... although 2017 Porsche and its all-turbo (notice I didn't say all-Turbo) lineup might make it cheaper and easier to get more ponies.

Posted by: Eugenio_SS May 24 2017, 01:39 AM

911 turbos are bloody expensive and only offer handicapped transmission.
There's the 911r... Also bloody expensive.
For that price I rather get a mclaren 570s... But it's a auto 🤢

Posted by: Eugenio_SS May 24 2017, 01:41 AM

Z06 is still half price of a 911 turbo
I can always put more $ for more power on the z06.
But would try to keep it under 1k hp since it's a track car

Posted by: Eugenio_SS May 24 2017, 01:41 AM

Other option is build a slc car

Posted by: CrashTestDummy May 24 2017, 02:07 PM

That 2018 ZL1 1LE Track Package car looks interesting. I know a friend is very satisfied with his '15 1LE SS. While he keeps running the car, and updating parts, he's still peering over the hood at the new Gen cars. Unless it's stupid-expensive, I'll almost bet he ends up with one of these ('18 Track Package).

How about seeing what the new ZR1 is going to be?

Don't get a McLaren. A guy in Texas has one and it breaks all the time. He has his own parking spot at multiple dealerships for his RV while he is waiting on them to fix it.

Posted by: DAlgozine May 24 2017, 03:05 PM

Ready to go ! Can be registered for the street.

That wouldn't happen to be a McLaren that runs in the One Lap Of America? If it is, it broke again prior to the race and was not able to be fixed prior to the race. There fix was to purchase a New GTR 1 day before the event!!! Talking with the owners wife she stated the McLaren breaks every-time they take it out and it has the most repairs of any McLaren in the US totaling $90k!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Andy and Ann Hollis' McLaren. The McLaren they bought to track and run the One Lap with that was actually _slower_ than their Honda that it was supposed to replace. They bought it to track, since they live really close to COTA. I think it has more 'laps' from COTA to the McLaren Dealership on a flatbed than on the racetrack itself!! nutkick.gif

I thought it funny that they thrashed on the McL to get it ready for this year's One Lap, only to have it break, into limp mode, when testing the latest repairs. They went to the Ni$$an dealership, located a bright red GTR, and drove it to the hotel for check-in for the event. They put the required stickers on the car in the parking lot of the hotel.

Andy says it's obvious that the GTR weighs more, but the thing handles quite well. You can get on the power a lot earlier than you think you can coming off the corners. Others wax poetic about how 'magical' the diffs are when driving the car in anger.

Gene Yeah sounds about right!!! That its going to be Ann daily driver!!! I normally keep this group in the loop. But I did compete in this Yr One Lap!! Race registration was Fri. Someone posted in need of a co-driver 1 Pm on Weds. 20 Min later I had a ride!!!! We started the wk in a Pontiac G8 and finished the week in a 800 mile 16 Chevy SS.

Nice! Started with a Holden, finished with a Holden!!

I had a friend who did one of those events in his LS-powered 76 Seville. 2thumbs.gif

Another one I'm considering in the list is a
Caterham 7 Type R Hayabusa... Or Caterham 7 CSR
Either one would have powertrain modified for a bit more fun factor.

You might consider a BMW i135 or i235.

Small, 3200 lbs, 300+ hp and over 350 easily avalible. Shares alot on performance parts with the 3 series.

Posted by: CrashTestDummy Jun 3 2017, 02:17 AM

Really depends on the ultimate goal. A toy you can 'make your own', or something stupid-fast off the show-room floor.

Posted by: 00SSHarrison Jun 3 2017, 05:27 AM

The 991.2 (newest) 911 gt3 is a monster track car that can still go get milk and you can get it with a stick, im a big vette fan but i think i would take a gt3 over a new Z.
but the "zr1" or what ever they want to call it should be here soon and i could only imagine that its goals are to keep up with a new Ford GT on the track so that might be worth waiting for.

More street car oriented for the 100k market that are over looked
Jaguar F type, but they have gone all wheel drive and i think zf auto only, so that sucks.
Aston V8 Vantage, about as nice looking as they get specially with the GT package, not the fastest track car tho
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, pretty sweet looking car and can out run a M3, id love to see one in person

I drove a friends bmw i135 at the last bmw event and it was a very fun car to drive. Fast and had very good turn in...

The launch control seems pretty solid, too. A friend brought one to a national event at Royal Purple, Houston. The drag strip was holding their Saturday night event. Another friend, a fellow knuckle-dragging CP driver, made a couple of passes in it. I don't remember the ET, but the launch control was so easy to figure out, a CP driver could do it. 2thumbs.gif

Seemed pretty quick for a BMW. This was a complete stocker, no ECU mods, or anything

F mod cars, BTW, are good for low-13s. It's amazing how slow those chain saw cars sound, but haw quick they really are. blink.gif

Too slow.
Want something faster than my winter beater
Must have
Ceramic brakes
Amazing handling
Good power to weight ratio.
If 2000+ lbs... Need at least 600+hp

Either one as long as razor sharp handling and neck breaking braking
Ideally close to 1:1 hp:kg ratio

Posted by: Eugenio_SS Jun 4 2017, 03:17 AM

Don't give a fuck about 1/4 mile.
Ideally 2g cornering lower weight, Great balance.
Challenging to drive... Ie enough power to let tires lose... Don't want a fast miata setup too easy to drive.

Posted by: CrashTestDummy Jun 5 2017, 08:10 PM

I wasn't implying you had to. Just indicating that it worked well, and was easy to set up, since someone who hadn't ever sat in one of the things got it working for the few passes they made in it. The owner should have configured it to start his autocross runs with, but I think he was mostly there for the fun.

Why not build a big HCI LS powered Exotec car.

Light weight, great power to weight, should be great handling (toss some 315's on it), add big brakes for stopping, costs less than half of the other cars (although cost doesn't seem to bother you) and can break the tires loose at any time.

Posted by: 79T/A Jun 7 2017, 04:17 PM

The Exocet is no bueno. I don't know who designed that chassis, but they shouldn't be designing chassis. Not a safe car, and you're stuck with Miata architecture.

My SS already has 315s in front, 345 rear with wider body.
Has over 1k hp on street tune with street fuel.
Have t56 ppg, 9 inch with limited slip, ue ta and phr, race penske shocks and lots of other goodies.
Dry sump setup 427T ls engine.
Porsche big brakes and lots more.

I want something way lighter with almost as much hp
Some days think about getting a Z06-z07 to have it modified for track

Posted by: Eugenio_SS Jun 30 2017, 03:33 AM

Ideally something with a real sequential transmission or at minimum dog great engagement manual.
Ceramic brakes a must.
Light weight and plenty of power but will balanced package.
911 gt3 not cheap seems great balance but underpowered for me.
Heck my winter beater has 400 hp and if lacks power as a daily driver... Modified 2015 sti.

Get the NP01 and put some crazy Turbo engine in it.

Oooooorrrrrrr

Import a Nissan Skyline R32. AWD, 5 speed, awesome Turbo straight 6 that'll make tons of power, right hand drive!

Pick up a C6 Z07. Not that much $$, ceramic brakes, a 1000 lbs lighter than your vert, spend a little on heads, cam, headers, tune and you'll be in the same HP/weight ball park as your vert with less weight, lower COM etc etc...

Just a thought. LOVE my '12 Z07.... If you look around, you can find one used, low miles at a dealership where they thing its a regular Z06 and price it accordingly. That's how I got mine. A guy here in socal got an '11 Z07 the same way. 6K miles, 55k.

Are you gonna sell the vert or keep it?
