Been lurking and reading for a while and finally found a car that I might buy and start taking to the track. It's a 1995 Firebird with 143k. Obviously, it's a six speed but it is also a hardtop. I know it has a bunch of miles, but overall it is in good condition.

I think it's worth around $4,000. Should I factor in the cost of a rebuild or do you think I can get some more life out of the motor? What should I be careful to look at on it?

PS - I also have a 94 Z28 M6, but it has been a never ending nightmare project that I just want to get rid of at this point.

That's a lot of miles, but you could run it and see what kind of power it has, then decide if you want to drop in a lower mile one or freshen up that one. I would say $3000-$3500 on that one if it is in decent shape. I ran my '94 TA with about 100K miles on it for three or so seasons then the power started dropping off drastically and parts started coming off the top end! It is rebuilt now, anxious to see the #s it makes!

It's also going to depend upon the area in which you live.

Here in the DFW area, there are LS1 equipped equipped track car candidates popping up at $5-7K

That drives the LT1 cars way down in price. I've purchased complete, non-running LT1 cars for as little as $600 and as much as $1000.
Running, driving and inspected LT1 cars in reasonable condition can be had for $2-3K.

I recently sold a 1993 hardtop TransAm with nice AX mods for $2000. 200,000 miles.

I sold it to a friend's 22 year old son, so I think I could have gotten $2500 on the open market.

I don't think you will get up to $4000 unless it is in mint condition except for the miles.

On the upside, the 95 has the good computer (no OBD2).

Don't just worry about the motor. If you're going to track the car, you need to be concerned with the hubs, rear bearings/seals, upper/lower ball joints, f/r control arm bushings, engine/trans mounts, engine/trans/diff fluids, brakes (LT1 brakes aren't so great), battery mount, power steering pump, plugs, wires, etc before you even worry about performance parts. It adds up quickly...ask me how I know!

It came with a NIB Spec clutch and new GM hydraulics, 17x9 and 17x11 chrome 10 spokes and a 98+ WS6 front body panels.

Sold everything but the clutch, getting my initial investment back, put a battery on it and it fired right up and holds good oil pressure. The clutch had come apart and it runs rough, but it runs.

This driveline is going into a 93 CMC Camaro I bought bought for $800 ...

Yes, it's going in my CMC car. It's only a Stage 1 clutch, though. But the disc has more springs and is reinforced on both ends of the springs.
I keep killing OE discs by breaking the tabs and ejecting a spring on the disc during a downshift.

Mitch, where do you find deals like that? I've been watching CL for years and have never seen a six speed fbody in decent condition under $2,000. Saw one for $1,200, but it was wrecked!

The $1000 Formula was a wrecked car. And it was wrecked beyond repair ... well, reasonable repair.
Turned out the right front shock tower was about 1/2 higher that the left.

Mostly local F-Body forums, word of mouth and CL.
autotempest.com makes it easy to search and navigate CL and other big "auto for sale" sites.

Maybe I'm just having bad luck then because I do the same thing. Here is the kind of sellers that I find. This was a 1994 hardtop Z28 with an unpainted hood, no AC, a bad interior and that *supposedly* only needed a new clutch and opti installed just to get it running. He wouldn't take less than $3,000 for it!

Here's one in Ohio if anyone is interested. The guy said it needs a transmission mount and front wheel bearing.
