My compressor died in a pretty impressive puff of smoke yesterday, I'm looking around online and see different part numbers ie. clutch, bearings.... should I try and repair if possible or should I just belly up and buy a new one. Granted I don't know what's wrong with it so I'd just be throwing parts at it.

Another thought that occured with all you weight-watchers out there, one of you might have one laying taking up space that you'd be willing to part with at a fair price. (just thinking out loud here).

Any sugestions would be helpful, I am in south Florida so its a bit toasty.

TIA

Yeah I'm one of those "weight watchers" but I already sold mine. That puff of smoke you saw was probably the freon parting company. The compressor might not be bad. If it is, you should be able to find a used one, or worst case, a rebuilt one.

My concern after giving this some thought is how long it has been sitting out. Do they degrade without pressure and oil flowing through them? Should I just buy a new one?

Damn it's hot down here....

no, unless you've been running it without freon in it. if you have a leak in the system and water gets in there...it's bad. but you can look on ebay and find a "new" one for about 150 bucks...not too bad seeing as how they are almost 500 from GM.

you'll need to put a vacuum on the system before you charge it. while it's in vacuum mode you can check for leaks. it's a good time to replace seals and rubber washers too. go ahead and replace the orifix tube as well. they are cheap and after about 70k miles it gets clogged.

I just pulled mine out last month, and it was working just fine when I did pull it. A/C was cold.
