Holy god, I just watched the in car videos of Plaid mode takeoff. So fast. Even with some tire squeal its amazing. Imagine that car with R compound tires. And they claim a 1/4 mile time of 8.x seconds? Electric again crushes the Hellcat. I'm not sure I can even imagine that car at autocross.

I watched someone attempt to do a track day at Road Atlanta in a Tesla. Hilarity ensued. I think it did 10 laps all weekend and spent most of the time on the charger. To top it off, it was dogshit slow because of the weight.

They do make the best street racing cars though. 1320 video has footage of a gutted one on drag radials crushing everyone on the streets. The thing is completely gutted and still weighs 4700 lbs (I couldn’t believe how heavy it was). Tesla as a drag car, hell yes. For anything else, hell no.

So much want there. Best part is, with 600 mile range, even with autocrossing involved, you'd still get 250 miles easy, and that covers you for a day-long regional event.

Consider that its 1.xx 0-60 time rivals that of a DM Lotus 7 clone powered by a Toyota Atlantic 1.6L 4 cylinder on proper slicks.

Not yet. Unless they've changed the rules recently, everything has to use an internal combustion engine for power. No 'golf carts' allowed on track yet. 2thumbs.gif

You're talking about the Model S though which is the same class of car as the Audi A8, BMW 7, Mercedes S. It's a big fat 7 seat car with stupid amounts of power so of course the only racing it's good for is drag. I'd imagine the roadster would be much more competitive but obviously we're still waaaay in the early days of racing EVs.

Nah, they've caught up. I don't know about earlier but just looking through the 2017 class guide(Appendix A), the old Tesla Roadster is SS, SSP, or SSR. The Model S is FS. The Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 are HS. Also, the modified classes have specific weights for electric motor powered cars now

I might have been taking part in that same track day. I remember a Tesla on track with me 1 or 2 years ago. Like you say, it was really slow.

The flip side of that is the NIO electric car which broke the track record at the Nurburgring right out of the box. A brand new car company crushing big name machines right out of the box!? That to me shows the potential of electric cars in the future.

I could never get past the thought that they are only good for a few passes on full power mode. Then the batteries are dead. When ever I have gone drag racing, I made at least 15 passes a day. It's neat, but I can't bring myself to like them. I like hearing my engines make some noise!

It's all about the size of the 'gas tank'. If you rolled up to the strip in your AA/A drag car that has a 2 gallon Mooneyes gas tank on the front frame rails, all you'd do is make a few passes and you'd be dead, too. Of course, you'd need a bigger 'tank', which really puts on the pounds, or, better yet, quick-change battery packs.

The sound is a thing, but I'd liken it to the sound of a turbo 4 vs. NA V8 vs. supercharged V8. They all make different, cool sounds, like I bet this thing does too.

So I guess that 'Plaid Mode' is Tesla for 'Flannel Shirt-wearing Redneck Drag Racing Mode'?
