Makes me wish I could've made it down to tulsa for power tour last month. Do you have any photos of your front bumper support (upper and main)? I'm trying to figure out what I want to do on mine. Its too much of a low hanging fruit to get some weight off the front axle to ignore. |

As far as the front bumper it is all stock w/ exception to the toe hook bracket and hood pin rods that are welded to it. Iirc the bumper is 20-25 lbs and at best u will only save half that if u make something yourself, and your home made piece won't support the facia well and probably won't work as well in an accident so I left mine alone For now, but might change in the future for aero work. |

Well now I feel stupid... I didn't realize the Camaro's were that different there. The firebirds have a 6lb slab that bolts to the top of the radiator support to hold up the top of the bumper. Thought you had a little more removed there, but I guess its just the plastic panel and the hood latch?
Anything hanging out in front of the front axle centerline, especially over two feet out is getting priority for weight savings, one of the reasons this build is taking forever. The 20lbs or so saved with a different crash bar should take ~27lbs off the front wheels. What I have visions of won't hold up well in a wreck but I'm not concerned since the car rarely gets driven on the street besides to autocrosses. I don't feel quite so bad not making it Tulsa now. I removed the complete front bumper assembly on my car. When I built the cage I put in a nose bar that is about 12" above the frame rail and has 5 down post to the unibody. I welded a bar between the front support where the stock bumper bolted to. I then used the stock plastic upper nose piece cut back to as little as possible to support the upper nose. I made a nose "push bar" out of 1" thinwall that followed the contour of the point in the front, welded that to the roll cage. And for the bottom I made it a front breather so it was fitted with aluminum panels to direct the air to the radiator. Now the nose comes off with about 12 nuts and the whole front of the car can easly be worked on.

There I removed the hood latch bracket (5-6 lbs?) and then sealed the factory plastic rad diffuser with 0.040 alum. With the tpi air filter stuff removed there isnt much there. |

Temporarily-hijacking the thread, well, continuing the hijack. Ryan, our Firebird has most of the front stuff missing, and the brackets that hold most of the front fascia up has been 'skeletonized'. When we first got the car, I thought I had an overheating problem, so I installed the factory radiator ducting to help direct that air from the front of the car to the radiator. I did that without taping stuff up to make sure all the air leaks were sealed. Well, I don't think that was really an issue, just not used to the car. It'll go to 210-220 on a run in 100-degree heat, but cools down pretty quickly by running the fan and starting the car for a short time to circulate coolant through the engine.
Anyway, I pulled all that ducting out, and was amazed at how heavy all that plastic is. I figured some aluminum panels could be built to accomplish the same job and probably save some weight. I haven't done that yet, as it doesn't appear to be necessary, but kept the duct work to use as a template if we ever see our LS* engine we're having built. The only other places I see to pull weight is to get get a set of those nice Mittler Brothers hole cutters and swiss-cheese the core support, and then perhaps cover the holes with some aluminum. Just some thoughts. I have also seen some hole cutting on the front LCA. Not sure I'd do that to a street-driven car, but it's certainly good enough for a CP car running 12" slicks on the front. The only other place you can get any weight off the front of the car is to upgrade the brakes to something lighter. |
