Just under 5 minutes of video to show 3.5 hours of taking a 3rd gen camaro from a complete running driving car (with severe subframe to chassis damage, just listen the the noise and watch the LF tire as the car pulls into the driveway) to parts. Everything was pulled off the car. Nuts/bolts were kept with subassemblies, put in labelled bags, etc. Yard was clear by 11:30, chassis was gone same day. Started at 8am, done by 11:30, ate pizza rolls and took a nap.

At 2:30 in we take a quick breakfast break. Enjoy.

I really hope that frame damage was worth sending it to the junkyard!

'King of the Hill' reference was great.

Yeah, I got a LOT of hate mail when we first sent it out. Tons of mullet-idiots saying 'I would have bought it!, I coulda fixed it!'. Whatever. Replay the vid, listen to the sound it makes as it comes into the drive.

3rd gens in S. Texas are cheap and plentiful and one where you have to pull the motor and trans and the front subframe, fix the subframe and then form and weld plates in where the subframe bolts to the chassis, then put it back together without the engine and trans and then take it to a frame shop to make sure it is straight and THEN put the tired 150k+ tbi 305 and 5sp back in and then....what do you have? A patched car with a ton of money in it when there are undamaged ones everywhere that are already cheap.

Folks act like there weren't a few hundred thousand of those things made. Each year. The parts kept three other 3rd gens on the road so it was worth it. I did have two guys who were a bit persistant and when I bought another 91 camaro to flip (bought for 800$, few quick repairs, sold for 2200$), I emailed both of them. I sent pics and said 'here's your chance! Buy it before we part it out!' (I wasn't going to part it out, it was too nice) and miraculously neither one could come up with the money, were too busy, etc. Everybody talks a good fight on the internet, but when it is time to put up or shut up, it sure does get awfully quiet. Man, I thought OUR neighbors hated us and all our cars, truck, trailer, late night beater-fests, etc.... I should just show them that video and tell them it could be worse. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Hahahahaa...

I LOVED living in a college town. I just know that some of the neighbors didn't like it too much (we kept late nite loud thrashes to a minimum), but they came around when they needed car advice.

Repost! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

It is kind of funny how folks type some serious crap. But when it comes time to step and do something in person, they become phantoms.

Another pet peave of mine is folks thinking that 3rd and 4th gen F-Cars are some sort of collectible just because production ceased. Asking collector car prices for a collectible car that is daily driven with 80K miles means the owner trying to sell is dillusional and doesn't understand what a "collector car" really is.

Does this mean that you're not giving me $40k for my 2002? (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

OH YES!!! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Sure, my 92 1LE/B4c is one of only 589 ever made....but I daily drive it and hpde instruct and autocross. I'm under no dillusion that it is worth a bunch unless I did a complete resto on it. Sure, it holds its value fine, and maybe a bit over 'market', but some of the folks you see w/cars on eBay or the dedicated f-bod sites are just on crack.

3.5 hours is damn good time. It took 2 of us about 8 hours to do this... and the motor and trans were gone already. We took every salvagle part out including the hardtop roof, which may make it's way onto my car someday.

A few people told me mine could have been fixed, and it looked a lot worse than the one you just trashed.

(IMG:http://www.vilipend.com/~frrax/albums/album39/DCP_0008.sized.jpg)

The spindle was bent, strut tower 2" closer to the valve cover on the passenger side than the driver side, broken brake line, flat tire, windshield cracked on driver side, bent strut tower brace, cracked AC box, the driver side fnder didn't line up right, and the hood had a peak in the middle. Along with all the obvious damage you see here.

(bold mine)

Sure...they can ALL be fixed. But at what cost? And when you have 3x what the current street price is in the repairs of the car then you are just stupid***. A 92 TBI car w/2000+$ in repairs (on top of the 750 purchase price), a trashed interior (we threw away the seats and carpet...they were nasty), and a tired motor is worth what? 1200$? No AC (which, in Texas means it will be tough to get 1000$!), worn out suspension, cracked to hell dash, etc.

***I've done it too. Put WAY more money into a car than what you could ever hope to get out of it. It's still stupid. <shrug>

Mine had a decent (paint completely faded off trunk lid and roof) LOOKING body. That was it. We've all seen it before. The great LOOKING car that was a worn-out POS, or the car that looked like crap that was stupidfast and handled great and was reliable. Things aren't always what they seem. Most really beautiful girls have SOMEone, SOMEwhere who is tired of putting up with their sh!t. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Even if the one we parted (we only 'trashed' the shell + front subframe) had been a PERFECT rolling chassis (no multi-thousand dollar frame damage) it would be worth what? 1000$? 1200$? At best! Do the math and you'll see it isn't pretty.

Stan,
Yeah, we were booking right along. We had two air compressors and two guys on airguns. Then two folks following them bagging the proper nuts/bolts/hardware and labelling and then two 'freelancers' who got other stuff out by hand. Two of us had stripped quite a few cars before and the other four also had fairly extensive auto experience. Between the six of us I was pretty sure we'd be done by lunch and we made it with 30 minutes to spare. The delivery guy actually asked 'uh...wh..wh...what kind of car did this USED to be??" My buddy had parted out a few cars before, so he didn't waste anytime. Me on the other hand I'm used to taking things apart "gently" so they can be but back together right. But that's totaly the wrong way to part out a car.
