I bought a spool gun (with the 10 foot lead) for my Hobart Handler 210 mig welder, played with it for about 15 minutes and stuffed it in the box. I bought a roll of .030 and a roll of .035 aluminum wire for it and some additional tips from my local welding store. It's pretty close to new in the box and it seems that I wind up using my tig for aluminum (I wasn't sure I'd ever learn to weld aluminum, but I'm getting better so I don't use the spool gun).

I paid $199 for the spool gun, $18.99 for each of the rolls of wire and I probably have $10 in additional tips/consumables.

$190 shipped OBO.

I also have a 40 cu ft bottle of argon (just filled by my welding shop, so it's completely full) that I might sell with the spool gun if someone needs it. If not, I'll just keep it as a back up for the TIG.

$90 (I can't ship the bottle)

will this work with a hobart 187? I'm assuming it should. Also, don't know about the spool guns much, but this is for welding aluminum with the mig welder. How does it compare to your tig setup?

This is the 3035-10 (10 foot cable) spool gun. The Handler 187 shows that it uses the 3035-20 (which my welder will also use). So I believe it will work with the 187, but you will need the spool gun controller for your welder (the 210 had it built in, but most of their other welders require a module).

PN 043856 Spool Gun Control SGA-100.

It is for mig welding aluminum (you can also put standard Mig wire or stainless wire in it if you wish). You'll never mig aluminum the same way you'll tig aluminum. This will weld aluminum, but it's a completely different animal than tig. The weld is much like a mig weld on steel, but using aluminum. I played with it for a few minutes (10-15) and wasn't super happy with my results (it just wasn't tig) so I put it away and went back to mig welding steel and tig welding steel/aluminum/stainless. Since I haven't had it back out, I figured I'd see if I could find a good home for it. It will allow you to make repairs on aluminum (which is a nice capability) and for far less than a Tig machine. It's just not a tig machine.
