Hey all,
While engine is being built I'm going to get the roll cage completed also. I currently have an ERW 1 3/4 .120 8 point cage installed back in 2000. Ran 1 HPDE with it under NASA. I assume this thing needs to be cut out. If so, Should I buy a pre bent cage or have it built to fit? 60 ft. of DOM is $385 here in Chattanooga. A prefabbed one online cage is around 650 shipped. I noticed a number of different styles of cages installed. Is there one install that is better than another? I have a 85 Iroc hard top. I noticed the roll cage in 1meanZ's car in which had 3 bars tied to the middle hump in the back set area. Is this a good hookup? Also, Is it difficult to take out the dash board? Or can I bend the bar down in front of the dash area and run it down in front to the bottom plate. Any advise or recommendations or pics would be nice. Thanks |

60 ft. of DOM is $385 here in Chattanooga. WOW! I just bought six sticks (22' joints) of 1 3/4" DOM .120 wall tube for less than that. Can you find a different supplier? Thanks. Just what I was looking for. I'll keep searching. Another company wanted 415 or so. |

Or do it yourself if you have the patience. http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/index.php?showtopic=11105 1Mean has the tripod in the back for the C4 Corvette IRS, there is no need for that in a beam axle car. |

Some drag cages have angled bars from the harness bar to the trans tunnel and that never made sense to me. The only reason to tie the trans tunnel to the cage would be if you have some wild custom support for your torque arm, or if you are stupid/crazy enough to put an independent rear suspension in your car like I did. As StanIROCZ stated, the "tripod" going to my tunnel is the front anchor point for my rear suspension. |

Is there any certification to provide when I go through tech on the welder who puts cage together or can this be a grassroots effort? |

It can be a grassroots effort but you need to trust your welder. Also, keep control of the design. There are good threads on cage design here and on corner carvers. Read, read, read and re-read the CCR and CLASS RULES. |

The CCR does not tell you how to build a cage - it only has minimum requirements. The weldor need not be certified but the welds need to meet AWS specs, so they need to know what they are doing, and have the proper equipment. 15.6.15 Welds All welding must be of the highest quality with full penetration and shall conform to the American Welding Society D1.1, 1994 Edition, Structural Welding Code, Chapter 10, Tubular Structures and Standards for the material used. Arc welding should be used whenever possible. It is strongly recommended that the welder inspect all welds using Magnaflux™, x-ray, or other effective methods. All tubes must be welded 360-degrees around the circumference of the tube. This post has been edited by Blainefab: Nov 20 2010, 09:12 PM |
