I'm wondering what some of you may have done for thermal barriers in your cars. I have removed my AC in the name of weight reduction. The AC never worked very well anyways (would need it on HIGH for 15min to even break the heat off of you).

Car is in CAMC and full interior (without back seat) 95 Z28. I like to drive it a lot on the street and the heat is what will be a killer. Heat and interior cabin noise is a recipe for headaches (for me) after only 10min of driving. Plus my wife won't come with me anywhere (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) and I like her so....I'd like for her not to complain.

SO, I've been looking around and it seems there are either tar-like material that are peel and stick, there are loose mats you lay down with foil backings and there are some you spray down. I'd prefer to avoid the spray on and peel/stick version since that crap gets messy.

Ideally I find some stuff I can put under my carpet that just lays there to help keep heat out.

Anyone have suggestions/products to look into? I assume some of you get hot on the road course.

Peel and Stick: Dynomat-ish products
Spray on: LizardSkin...Eastwood has a version as well
Loose mats: Not sure of the product being used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFIfnA08--g

Not that we street drive it any, but I've tried the reflective stuff on the underside of the front seat area and transmission hump, and it hasn't done much. The gas pedal area will still get hot enough to feel it through the shoes, and the side of the transmission hump can get so hot you don't want to touch it with any bare skin. Being a CP car, we're not interested in adding a bunch of weight, so the other sorts of insulation/blankets, etc., aren't being considered.

I think Alan has added some aluminum tread plate as a second layer in the footwell area for some race cars he's built that has, at least, allowed someone to drive the car for extended periods of time without cooking the driver's feet. I'm pretty sure I've seen some pictures here somewhere, but they're no doubt several years old by now.

Most of the time, the real issue is heat soak, so the heat will radiate in from the outside, floorboards, firewall and roof, so there's little relief w/o A/C. Hopefully you still have at least a working blower and ducting to at least allow some ventilation. We have none of that, of course, but have been pretty successful using the re-freezable freezer packs. We'll tuck one each in to pants pockets, and I tuck a couple in each back corner of the seat back, and can stay pretty cool that way. When things really warm up, I'll tuck one under each arm pit when not driving.

I'm sure that's probably not something your wife will be willing to do. My bride's okay with it. Heck, she brings the things home from work (they get a lot of stuff shipped on these ice packs, and the hospital just pitches them out).

I put some stick on DEI glass mat with foil backing on the firewall and toe boards of my car, haven't tested yet though. they also make a sound & heat version.

Thanks guys.

Since making this post I spoke to second in command at DEI and for my application they suggested their "work horse" product Floor and Tunnel Shield II. A thin fiberglass peel and stick with a foil backing. He suggested putting it up the firewall as far as I could, down under the seats and above the trans.

Adding ice packs is a little out there (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Car still has HVAC controls and a blower motor so air can be moved around.

I've thought of a Lizard Skin approach, but DEI made a good point that if you need to cut/weld, things can get messy and is fairly permanent. So many products out there with what seems to be very little data to support claims.

Many on Corvette Forum have praised the cheap HVAC ducting insulation Frost King which is another peel and stick product to use under the carpet. Both Frost King and DEI won't add much weight either.

I know quite a few people that have used Lizard Skin, and they all have said the same thing. It helps cut down on noise, but it doesn’t do a damn thing to cut down on heat transfer to the cabin.

I put some of the peel and stick reflective heat tape underneath the car on the floorboards above the collectors and exhaust. It seemed to help a little. Stopped melting my shoes.

The plan seems to be DEI under the car and some Frost King under the carpet/over the trans tunnel.

I think I've lost an external heat shield below my pedals. The heat has cut through any plastic, padding, carpet and multiple floor mats over the years. The heal of my right shoes get deformed and sometimes it gets damn uncomfortable on that heel.
