I want to remove the airbag from the drivers side of my daily beater - geo metro. I have had it disconnected for a while now but it's uneeded weight. I removed the passenger one today (and glovebox - all seats except driver's were removed along with the spare & jack)
Do I need any special tools to take it out or do I just start unscrewing things? it looks like there are 2 torx heads that I might need to undo? |

Uh...Un needed weight. Geo metro? Did I just see that in the same sentence???
Oh boy..... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif) I believe (check a manual on this), you just pull the torx bolts and it will drop out. |

I forgot I had a manual - but it isn't too descriptive. I guess I'm going to be getting me an external torx socket or screwdriver.
FYI for those of you in NY: Title III Article 5 NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law ((IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) In the case of any passenger car manufactured on or after September first, nineteen hundred ninety-seven, during the course of the vehicle safety inspection, the readiness of the inflatable restraint system, by means of the readiness indicator, shall be noted on the invoice supplied to the consumer. The system`s lack of readiness shall not be considered grounds for the vehicle to fail the safety inspection provided for in subparagraph (a) of this paragraph. |

I've brought this up before, has anyone used a simple on/off switch for track use. Can't say it'd do much good on track. Probably be a detiriment.

Then when you remove it you can set it off to see what it looks like when it goes off. :leaving: i could track you down some directions to activate the bag. 2 long wires and a 12 volt power source. Oh wait Only to be done by a trained Proffesional. Just make sure the bag is facing the right way or you are going to launch the thing into a low orbit. JOhn |

One of the local guys here pulled a air bag out of a 4th gen car and set it off.
I would consider what I saw to be a small explosive device. |

I got it out despite the bolts being 2 T50 external torx bolts. Sears didn't have anything, when I got back in the car I used my sizing tool - a 5/16" hex socket - on noticed it fit pretty snug. I got my driver and sure enough it came right out without a struggle.
As for setting one off... maybe it'd be interesting to get one from a junkyard and set it off, I want to be able to put it back in. And steve... just pull the fuses. The metro had 2 under the steering column, I think the Camaro has them in the fuse block. The metro also had a plug that could be disconnected in the steering column and one under the glove box. I have seen switches for "passenger" airbags, they would probably work too. I'm thinking if you wanted to do some cutting & soldering you could probably pick up a simple switch at radioshack. |

I also got the carpet out... the rubber grommets on the driver side was leaking water.... good thing I removed the carpet so I can seal those up. |
