Vancouver is nice, and crime is pretty low for North American city...
cost of living is among the most expensive in Canada... especially due to housing industry in Vancouver... don't know about Washington, though.
Also, in Vancouver... english and chinese are the predominant languages.

I currently live in Vancouver, WA and work in Portland, OR. I just moved here from Seattle with my wife and kids in December '03 for a job change.

The weather is significantly better than Seattle. Usually about 5 degrees warmer in the spring and summer from what we've seen so far, and a lot less rain. The unemployment rate is about 6.5 percent the last I heard. Not the greatest, but Vancouver is growing at a pretty good rate and the job outlook is probably better than Portland. I would definitely secure your employment before moving out here though.

Cost of living is a bit better than Seattle and probably other major cities as well. Housing is a lot more affordable. A decent four bedroom house in a good neighborhood here goes for $200k to $220k+, quite a bit less than across the river in Portland. The crime rate in Vancouver is certainly better than Portland too.

Someof the things I enjoy the most about living here is being only about 10-15 minutes away from Portland International Raceway, a world class roadcourse (almost). The Columbia River is full of salmon, great boating and virtually unlimited outdoor activities available. Don't forget a spectacular view of Mt. St. Helens eruptions which are getting more and more frequent.

I would definitely come out here for a visit before you make your decision though. And target some potential employers to schedule interviews with in the same trip.

Good luck with your decision!

Steve

Vancouver is pretty nice. I live just across the river, on the Oregon side.

Living in vancouver has its advantages, since Oregon has no sales tax, you can shop in OR, and dodge the tax. ;-)

The Job market is not the greatest (as mentioned above) but is slowly starting to pick up a little. Cost of living isn't bad, but its not cheap either, although significantly less than Cali, or the Seattle area.

Growing up in the NW, I would say the weather is nice, but will likely be a system shock to someone from Atlanta. Most of the winter, we hover around 40* with our fair share of rain.

The Columbia Gorge region, is possible one of the most beautiful places on the planet though. You will be in breathless the first time you see the waterfalls, and whole Colulmbia Gorge.

its rains alot here in the NW.

funny thing is, i've been here for about 4 years now.. and people tell me, these past 4 years have been a drought..

lol, so its suppose to rain MORE?! I have a college friend that also moved over here, and he was equally shocked to hear that too.. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif) he's originally from SC, and I'm from NJ.

There's lots of nature stuff around you.. palce to be for people that like nature, hiking, skiing, hunting, etc.

Overally, its a nice place to live.. we don't get much snow in the portland area.. but all the areas around us do.

I think it would take us like 25yrs to get that much rain (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif)
