Alot of you know that my car has been down for a year now and I have been working on a mega compression stock inched motor. But I needed something just to get the car back on the road. If I couldnt get my fix soon I was probably going to slip into some horrible bi-polar depression.
One of the other moderators on LS1tech.com was unloading his cam only motor at an extremely good price and he was nice enough to lower it even further for me. Its a 98 motor with a TREX cam (242/248 .608/.612 110), double valve springs, MTI rods, ARE oil pump, cloyes timing set with JWIS chain. The motor is complete minus headers, intake, TB, Fuel rails and injectors. I have everything except the TB and the headers. Its last dyno it made 417rwhp through a TH350 w/ 5000 stall (unlocked), 5.xx gears and "31 slicks. Thats pretty stout considering its a cam only motor. I currently have an LS1 intake which will choke it down a bit but with a M6 and a 10 bolt with CF driveshaft and regular sized tires it should still make some good hp. My only concern is the cam. The TREX is BRUTAL. The ramp rates are astronomicaly fast which doesnt lead to long valve train life around a road course. So I may think about dropping my Grand Am cam in it. Wont make as much HP but the valve train will survive alot longer. I am hoping to have the motor up here from Texas in the next couple of weeks. |

Why is it taking so long to get the original motor built?

Mainly funds. 14.0:1, 8000+rpm motors cost bookoo. The machine work on the block alone is closing in on 2 grand. then just the components to actually survive in the enviroment arent cheap. I am basically making a higher compression more powerfull world challenge motor. Give Lou a buzz and see what he has to shell out to have one put together. I thought I could do it cheaper..........there is where I went wrong "I THOUGHT".

Sounds like a great "loaner" motor (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif)
It is odd to hear someone talk about stepping down the a grand am cam. So Boyce, when is your next ORR? What are you going to use to run the engine mangement on the new motor? |

don't know when I will actually be able to get the car to a run. I still need to come up with money for the couple parts I still need for the "loaner". I MIGHT make the PE130 just as a spectator/navigator. Who knows, if I can get the car together with the diff cooler I might just drive the bitch down there. I have been known to pull rabbits out of my hat in the past.
As for engine management the stock PCM will be able to handle anything I throw at it. Since I am running N/A I don't need anything fancy to control spark or fuel. |

What kind of rod bolts are you using in the new motor to spin to 8000 rpm? The best rod bolts I could find are made by Katech, but they wouldn't commit to an rpm that they are good to. They did say 7200 was no problem, though. I was going to use ARP's but then I found out the Katech's are a lot better because they don't distort or take the rod out of round. They sure are pricey bolts; I think it was about $150 for the set.

ARP pro 2000's. They come with the new compstar rods. |

It has been seen on the street from time to time though. W/ the new motor it will be even less. I run the open road races and am trying to hit 200mph on a stock inched, NA Ls1. And to do that its going to need to spin and make oodles of HP. And be able to do it for 1/2 hour to 40 minutes at a shot. |

WOW! Guess it REALLY would be cheaper to race a full season in a 510 than to build your motor.... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Datsun 510s have a pretty big "underground" movement....and have little problem selling if you market them to the "right" crowd....selling a race car version is a little harder, but I sold mine in 2 months.... I could put you in touch with THE 510 guy out there who buys and sells 510's all day as a business....he was my source for all parts when the car broke something, or got hit...you could sell one car to him I am sure...hard part would be getting it to Fremont CA... |
