does anyone happen to know of a motorcycle forum that is not brand specific? im looking into a naked bike, as they are called, and im torn between the susuki SV 650/1000 and the Honda 919. so i was hoping to do some research on the two or others but i only know of brand specific forums and i do not foresee them being too helpful for a comparison basis. thanks

i know this one isn't completely brand specific...

http://forums.sportbikes.net/forums/index.php?

don't forget about the FZ6(R6 motor).. it's in the same price range as the SV650

http://forums.sportbikes.net/forums/forumd...isplay.php?f=69

i'm a little partial to the FZ6 since i have one.. you gotta love motors that rev to 14k rpm

sv650 has about 73 horsepower compared to the FZ6 which has about 90 horsepower

thanks for the reply Josh. i had heard that Yamaha had a naked bike but i did not know the model. do you know if it comes without that half fairing? im actually looking at completely naked bikes so the SV 650/1000S is not on my list. it was just recently that i realized you could even get the SV without a fairing completely. i always thought they had the half fairing.

ill poke around that site. thanks

You may want to try a local board. Around here we have dcsportbikes.com and I imagine your area has something similar. Usually lots of different bikes there and you can get some sort of unbiased opinion there.

haha well im still so torn over which bike or what to do with the money honestly. ive got 79 TA that id love tp put a 2004r into so i can actually get good gas milage.

as for bike though im still heavily leaning towards the 919. oh the sportbike.net link was really good. ive been doing a lot of reading on that site.

im signed up for the motorcycle safety course in january. so now ill have some formal training and finally be getting my motorcycle endorsement. had a bike for two years and that was over a year ago that i sold it and im just now getting the license and i don't even know if im going to get another bike. well see though

i would personally go w/ the Honda 919, since it's mechanically the same as the CBR900 was a few years back.
Yet, the SV is a great starter bike and very forgiving... also cheaper on purchase and insurance.
It's a matter of taste, imho.
And i'm torn between which fast bike to get too... but not doing it soon... priorities, priorities.

very true about the priorities. im not looking to purchase very soon either. maybe the first few months of next year at the earliest.

im not sure on insurance but because im buying used the SV 650/1000 and 919 are all about the same price range actually. some are better than others and cost more than others but the purchase price is about the same.

ive had a honda shadow as my first bike. had that for 2 years and sold it last summer in 04. so the 919 would be the first style of bike ive had like that. so far i really havent found anything negative about the 919 for what i intend to use it for.

I had a Honda VFR800 and was pretty happy w/ it.
Honda has always given great products... I've also driven lots of CBRs 919, 929, 954 and the 919 is a great bike, without having to pay the whole insurance price of a supersportbike, you get a supersportbike of 3 years old technology without the full fairing... if you are considering Honda 919, SV1000, you should also consider the Yamaha FZ1, which I would chose over the SV.

thanks Eugenio. i actually love the VFRs. that single swing arm, it looks so badass and the rims, oh man. great bike. that bike is on my list for sure. the problem there though is that even 10 year old versions cost as much as an 02 919. the naked bikes are a great deal right now. i just wish i had more money to spend honestly. ill look into the VFR some more. the older versions with the 750 i prefer the looks of.

just note that the 750 version have lots of issues w/ the regulator going south... common fix is to put a cpu fan on it... 3$ mod that saves a lot of trouble.
98+ were newer models, 02+ introduced the latest design + Vtec as well.
for the 98-01, the 00 models don't have choke anymore and the mirrors are no longer the condom style. of those models, the 00+ are very fuel efficient... 98s are the worse for mileage.
upto 97 model, we're talking carburated engine.
I had a 99 (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I have always ridden naked. My first time was an 88 Hawk GT. From there I went to an SV650 , 01 Speed Triple (still my favorite in Roulette Green) to my present ride, an 03 FZ1.

You shouldn't be too quick to characterize the SV650 as a beginner bike. I miss the agility and flingability of the 600 class vtwins. You definitely lose something when you go for the liter bikes. I could ride the snot out of the 650, beat on them as hard as I could, and the return in terms of enjoyment just kept going up. You quite simply cannot do that on a liter bike! If I rode my FZ1 with the same gusto I did my Hawk, I would quickly end up on a stretcher!

Liter bikes demand a great deal of respect. That dynamic can really inhibit you as a learner. I always recommend a beginner chose something less intimidating, that will allow him to be comfortable enough to really stretch his skill level.

For unbiased, intelligent and enthusiatic opinions on naked bikes, V-twin sportbikes or sport-standards, I would heartily recomment HawkGT.com. It was my home online for ages, though I have not been there for several years. I might have to wander over there myself.

aww.. sounds like you're not even going to get a bike (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

oh well, you're probably better off spending the money on your TransAm anyway

i had a good bit of experience on a couple honda dirt bikes and an old honda street bike before i bought my FZ6.. i thought that i loved those dirtbikes and that old streetbike.. but i really found out what love is on the FZ6 .. i was not prepared for how much fun this bike is

now i have a new job that pays MUCH better and my number one priority is this:

totally agree... the SV650 is still not take lightly, but i still find it a great beginners bike, even if it cana scare the shit out some ppl that don't drive with brains.
driven Hawk GTs too... great bikes and better $.
The only thing I disagree is about the agility... most liter bikes are as light as the 600cc, especially in the sport bikes... so I would take a 1liter anyday... but that's because I've been driving bikes since mid 90s... wouldn't recommend it at all for a newbie.

looks great... it's one of the ones I'm considering, as well as the CBR1000RR amd GSX-R1000.
Love the ZX-12, but not as nimble.
now w/ the purchase of my little house and lots of appliances/furniture/tools, I'll wait at least for another year before considering a bike.
Can't have all @ once.
Work is treating me very well, and I might get lucky toy-wise... the problem is that I have many toys and expensive hobbies... (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

After 15 years of not having a bike and really wanting one, I've finally got another. Two actually, I just picked up a old 91 ZX11 with 16K miles for a whopping 1500 bucks. I will keep the 99 R1 for the weekend mountain rides and maybe some track days. The ZX11 is for two-up touring with the wife.

I'm having a ball, it's like going back 15 years! I'm still actually pretty quick even with the long hiatus at I had. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

i just have a lot to think about before i jump into an investment such as a bike. i want one for sure but i cant be foolish with my money and just throw it around. i appreciate everyones info and input. i have the same thread going on like three or four boards. its hard for me to remember what all ive said in each one. worst part is if i still had my shadow id just ride that. no reason to think about buying another. this time aroudn though i don't want to buy a temp bike. i want what i want and will keep it for a long time.
