I now own a radar gun...., Just because it was there? Options

Have any of you played with the Bushnell Velocity radar guns yet? There was a guy at Mid Ohio with one and it was rather neat to see the straightaway speeds for some of the race classes, so I thought I should own one someday. That day is today. I ran across a deal on them through my friend the FFL (where I purchase all of my firearms). One of his catalogs had the radar guns in with the Bushnell scopes, so I ordered one. It reads from 6-200 mph and will clock a car from 1,500 feet away (per the manual). It will also clock a baseball from 6-110 mph and 90 feet.

I need to get outside to test this thing, it looks neat. All I can say so far is that it drives my radar detector insane when I squeze the trigger, I guess that's a good sign.

Basic test, the cars on my road were doing 48 mph (all three) which is about right for a 40 mph speed limit (nobody actually drives 40, it's usually more like 50). That doesn't tell me that it's truly accurate, but it's a good sign that it wasn't showing 96 mph (and since it's snowing currently, I'd not believe it if it did). It seems to have great range as well.

I've owned three different types of radar guns. One car fixed mount(K band), Hand held(k band) and Stalker Stats gun(Ka Band). They are a blast to carry with you and find someone passing you that has a dectector, wait until a Bridge and hit the brakes. Also funny to see someone go by you with a dectector and it never go off!!! I've tested a bunch at work and had to get the gun within 5ft to get some model to go off.

But there was one downside for me. I actually had a person follow me, Once I stopped at my work, to remove the unit, the person that was behind me, went down the road turned around, stopped and asked if I was a cop and if I was testing a new radar system. Now the speed display unit was on the floor, the antena was between the head rest of the passenger seat. Not in plain view.... and night time. Only thing that tipped him off, was his dectector went off around me, when I wanted to see his dectector go off. Kinda freaked me out and didnt play with it much on the road. My last gun the stalker could pick up cars at 7,000+ ft, large highly reflective 10,000ft+, small fast moving targets like snowmobiles 2,000 ft.

I'll bet that thing is worth it's weight in gold at an autocross event. You would be able to witness the faster drivers driving slower through certain sections of the course to obtain faster times. That could be a great learning tool for me. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif)

Maybe it might just screw up the concentraion of other drivers if you were sitting there pointing a Gun at them!!! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif)

It may confuse one that is close in frequency. However, each band is a range and this is on X band (according to my Bel radar detector). Unfortunately, Columbus Police Department issues laser guns and the sheriff and crew use K or KA band stuff. So, it's probably a non issue.

The package says it "conforms to all FCC rules for home or office use" (whatever that means). It doesn't seem to say anything about "use it on the road", but I haven't yet seen any specific law against it (not that I've looked).

The car shut off at an actual 158.1 mph on a 162 mph speed limiter on the dyno.

My gps shows that it is about 1.5 mph high at 80 mph. Knowing that the error will very likely increase with speed in a non linear fashon, that seems about right/reasonable.

I found out my speedometer was reading 4 or 5 mph low on the high end. I went through the speed trap on the Bonneville Salt Flats at 160.959 mph with the speedo reading 155 to 156 mph.

That radar gun is pretty cool. They sell them at Radia Shack. It is fun to trigger cars as they come across the parking lot. It doesn't take long to find out who has a radar detector.

on base here, one of the cops was calibrating the thing with a tuning fork. he had a set of forks that were labeled 35, 50, and 76 mph. hit the fork, stick it in front of the radar and it's supposed to read whatever the fork is rated at. simple and you get cool sounds.

you wont be able to trick the cops unit unless you are using the same exact model. they have encripted guns that send out a signal like morse code for high powered transmissions. if the incorrect morse code is returned it's disregarded. also, they have higher power units. in order to jam a radar (this is my job in the military, so believe me when i say this) you have to have more power being put into the system than what's going out. so, if you have say...50 watts going out of the radar gun, you would have to have at least 51 going into it. here's the kicker...for ever 1 mile that RF travels, it loses about 50% of it's wattage (or power). for starters, your gun would have to have about 3 times the power of the cop's unit, and it would have to be the same brand or be encrypted as the same brand,

Does that mean the reflected signal being bounced back to the gun still has the same strength?
Seems like it would be weaker because it's traveled twice the distance, and had to reflect too.
Weaker than a straight shot from the jamming gun traveling half the distance of the reading gun.

But there is still the encryption anyway...
