A buddy of mine is trying to repair his Dakota's fan. He's traced the wiring and has 12V to the switch, but still nothing. The fan works fine when you direct-wire it to the battery. He's concerned that a resistor pack or perhaps something else within the vehicle has caused the problem. All fuses are good, and he's verified power to the switch. The switch is integrated to the HVAC controls, IIRC. Anybody out there got experience with this?

Usually there's a resistor pack (metal coils) for the lower fan speeds. If the fan works on high, but not the lower speeds, that's a good test for a bad resistor pack.
That's the only thing I can think of, that would be between the switch and the fan. Maybe he can verify that he gets 12v coming _out_ of the switch, in addition to coming into to the switch. Just to rule out the switch itself. The resistor pack should be on the hvac housing, with 4-5 wires going to it. Probably near the fan, and probably in the airflow path to keep it cool too. |
