I'm looking for an aftermarket seat. I can no longer stand the OE seat, especially for road trips. Of prime concern is head room (I'm 6'2") and seat base width. I have sat in Mike Farrell's car and liked his seat (Mike chime in with your brand, I have CRS) but want to know other's setups. Also, costs, ease of installation, etc. Post pictures if you have them! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I bought a set of Corbeau TRS "Wide" seats for my 2002. When I installed them, I lost almost an inch of headroom (I'm 5'11" and that was bad enough) and the bottom of the seat was "flat", parallel with the floor. Everytime I hit the brakes, I slid until the belt caught me. I kept them in the car for less than 2 weeks before I sold them and lost $250 on the deal (about what the restocking fees would have been and shipping costs). So, that was a brief, but expensive lesson. I think I'm going to look for cloth seats from a Trans Am and just use those.

I put a set of Corbeau CR1's in mine. (used to be called Carrera) They have the flip forward feature too.
I got the wide version. They fit fine between the armrests and the console. I also got the optional shaving of the seat cushion ($50 each). Gained maybe 1/4" of headroom over the stock seats. (every little bit helps when the helmet is touching the t-top) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Didn't lose any headroom, so that was good! The stock seats curled forward too much for me at the top. These sit up straight. Strano had the best price that I found on them. Arlyn knew the people at the factory and was able to help expedite mine in time for an Evolution class. The seat+bracket was lighter than my electric driver side. And heavier than the stock passenger side. In the end, the pair was exactly the same weight as what I took out. (to the 1/2 lb according to my digital bathroom scale). |

I have the Cobra Daytona seats, and really like them. The main problem for all you tall people is the slider assembly that sits on top of the seat bracket. The stock seats have the slider built into the seat bracket. If I was over 6' tall I would try to somehow make the stock bracket work with the new seats.

I have a Recaro Speed being shipped today. It took over a month to become available. Now there telling me they don't have the bracket to go with it. I told them to ship it with a slider and I would have a bracket custom made. I hope this works. What a pain in the ass.

I picked up a Kirkey Intermediate. With the cloth cover.
3 reason. Width, head room, and weight. You can get them from 17" to 22" (no 19") and they weigh very little. Plus are very comfortable. It isn't in the car yet though. I will post how that went in a week or two. And how it worked at an autox in about 3 weeks. |

I have a pair of Sparcos in my car. If you want to improve headroom, bolt the seats directly to the floor with no sliders. The Sparco side mount seats and brackets make that fairly easy to do.

I installed a Recaro SRD yesterday. Fits nice and seems OK so far; only drove to work. Seems like it will be easier then most race seats to live with, ie: getting in/out of the car.
I mounted it using a Corbeau bracket for the 4th gen. I made a couple pieces of steel to adapt the bracket to the seat. So far seems solid. I think I gained some headroom vs. the stock seat. I need to figure something out to guide the shoulder harness on the seat. Right now it's riding on my neck. I'm not sure if there is anything solid in the side of the headrest to screw the guide into. Seems like it is just made of styrofoam or something judging by the way it squeeks under the fabric. George, do you have any pictures of the seats installed? I sat in an SRD seat and found it to be much better than the Corbeau's I had sat in. I wouldn't mind something reclinable that also has good overall support for the track.

Sorry, don't have a digital camara yet. Try a search. There are a lot of cars with the SRD's in them. They are a very nice seat.

Lonnie, I'm very interested in your seat and its install. Please post pictures when you can. I've seen pictures of the Kirkey seat, and it appears to be what I want. TIA, Rob

I got my Recaro Speed last week. After looking at it I decided not to go the custom bracket route. It looks like way too much hassel. Supposedly I'll have the Recaro bracket and slider next week. I'll post a picture once I bolt it in. Hope I don't loose any headroom. The seat itself is really nice. The jury is still out on the placement of the opening for the sub strap. It's about 8 to 9 inches back from the front of the seat. looks like a real nut buster positioning to me (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

(IMG:http://207.127.219.37/images/interior10.jpg) (IMG:http://207.127.219.37/images/interior11.jpg) i lost a little headroom. i adjust my seating position until i get custom brackets done. for now, i use the recaro slider and the recaro bracket, although i trimmed the bracket so i can use the lowest position. awesome seat. completely love it. |

I haven't received my slider or bracket yet. Where did you trim your bracket at , and what was involved? By the way those look great in your car.

Yeah, seat looks great in the picture. How does the seat feel compared to the stock seat, particularly on long distance trips? Any discomfort issues?

I should have taken a before and after pic of the bracket. I'm sorry. the bracket has 3 holes in it. if you try to attach the bracket to the slider using the lowest setting/hole, the part of the bracket hits the floor board. so I took out my dremel with reinforced cutting disc, and chopped off the two unused holes. I guess it would make more sense with a picture though. so with the 2 unused holes chopped off, you can now use the lowest hole which lets the seat down into the lowest setting on the bracket without interference with the floorboard.
the seat is actually just as comfortable as stock seats. it really is great. I drove to MIR from NJ and it took 5 hours. I felt great when I arrived. the seat has no comfort issues at all. and the side bolstering in invaluable during race events. I would never go back to stock again. |
