the Champ race tomorrow is a 3 way tie for 1-3 of 3 of our very own FRRAX members! positions 1-3 will have to be determined by best lap.

Guys, I was at Nationals, unfortunately I was really busy during the day helping to crew for my friends GTS car (the #15 GTS4 Porsche 911 in the pics up top). I watched you guys run as much as I could but didn't have time to stop by the paddock until evening, and you weren't around. I will have to download pics tomorrow evening and email them to one of you to post. I look forward to meeting some of you next year hopefully. It was definitely some great action in CMC and AI!

Damn, it even looks good in pictures! Any chance someone got a shot of it after the wreck? I'm damn impressed with the repairs. I'm proud to be a part of that repair job.

PS- Thanks for the pics, Bill!

I wish I'd known, I'd have come over and swung hammers and wrenches on it with you guys. I heard it was a hard hit and the guys were saying "I think Sydney will be shopping for a new chassis", so I assumed it was a write off (and since I hadn't seen it in person, that's what I went on). It looked good on track after you guys hammered it back out.

Not a new chassis, but it needs some work. It's amazing what you can do with a little white and yellow duct tape and a porta-power.

When did you wreck? Christine retired with a few laps to go (5?), and the lap before she retired she was 16 seconds behind you, so you must have had issues quite late in the race.
There are so many frrax.com folks that I wish we had known to say hey to. We would have made that time (since time was pretty short during the week).

Jason, could you post some detail photos of the bracket failure when you feel like looking at it?

Reading your description is what concerned me enough to ask for more. Was there any deformation of the stock bracket, or did the extension just come off? Is the upper PHR brace still stock? Was there a bolt and spacer through what was formerly the bottom hole of the stock bracket? Was the bracket fully welded all the way around the perimeter? Was there just not enough weld penetration? I keep kicking around thoughts of trying to improve on the stock upper brace with something that connects to the bottom stock hole or maybe both.

Hey Sean,
One thing that is a MUST with the brackets is to be sure that the upper PHR brace bolt is tight. Mine loosened up on the '96 and when I started getting unexpected tire rub with the 315's I investigated. The once the upper bolt was tight, the rub went away again. I'm certain that the bracket would have failed with the amount of movement I was getting.
This is not to say that Christine's failure was caused by something similar (especially since Jason had been checking that bolt), just something to check frequently.
I looked at Christine's bracket earlier this year, due to an earlier failure. It appeared to me that the initial weld wasn't all that it should have been. I've seen two other brackets fail due to poor welds and once the first failure occurs, you really have to brace the area to ensure that the failure doesn't re-occur.
The timing was a total bummer for Christine

I didn't get a good look at the back side of the weld (axle side). When I really took a closer look, it was on the second level of a car hauler and the tail was hanging off the back (Mitch and I were standing under it). It appears that the sheetmetal tore at the dog-leg (where it kinks down to the vertical section). I'm guessing it will need to be plated on both sides, permiter welded and rosetted in a few other locations to make it solid. I'm sure this failure was caused by the first failure, and I have no way of knowing what exactly caused the first failure. So, I'm not much help there.
As I remember, the upper PHB brace is a stock part.

A brake line blew on the last lap of Sat's qualifying race, IIRC. It could've been way worse, so we got lucky. Sidney is the driver, I'm just the crew.

Here's some pics I found of the before:

Shit! TJ, thanks for finding those photos but I probably could have done without seeing those!
My week had some UP's and down's...pun intended. Thursday it ran hot as I had never run with the new air dam and just kept cutting the front out until it ran cool. Also had trouble keeping plug wires on. Didn't get a fast lap until Friday qualifying. During Friday's race I had a blast. Ended up 8th right on the rear bumper of Matt Erickson's '05 Mustang (he finished 3rd on Sunday). Saturday was going good with me in around 9th or 10th and I was just planning to hold my position and not make any stupid moves as I was going to end up with a very good starting spot on Sunday. On the white flag lap going into the keyhole...my pedal went to the floor. To make matters worse, I caught the throttle as I had my toe over the pedal getting ready to "heal-toe" for the downshift. I popped Beau Dunnivant in the left rear corner and shot across the gravel. The video sounds like the fronts were locked but without rears, it was pushing pretty hard under acceleration. After we got the body back together we were bleeding the brakes and I heard a "hissing" sound from the rear. Bob Denton #67 CMC crawled under the rear and found brake fluid spraying out the right rear line. Fixed that and had it back on the track for Sunday's Championship race. Started 24th and finished 11th. Was up to 9th but the brakes started fading and I got chicken and backed off losing 2 spots. Very, very happy with my finish after Saturday's incident.
Huge thanks to TJ, his little brother Mikey, Bob, Brian, and Elaine for getting my car back on the track.

Wow Sidney, that sounds like a hell of an effort you threw at it! Sorry I never stopped by, I didn't even realize you were there until after the fact. It seems that our AI FRRAXers had some serious gremlins to work through during the event but the good part is that everyone came out of it unharmed. I'll definitely try to catch you at the next event!

Going back to the Panhard rod backet. I took a look at it, on the hauler, and the welds looked fine. The stock sheetmetal bracket sheared about 2" inches above the UE bracket, at the spot where the stock bracket has the oval shaped cutout on the wheel side. The factory bracket is sheet metal, and from what the failure looks like, I think there is fore and aft forces on it, not just lateral. I think I will reinforce mine with either triangles or tubes welded to the frame rails.
