I'm having an issue with a Sears garage door opener. It's probably 8 years old, and has always worked fine. Here lately, when the button is pressed, it only goes up a few inches. Press the button again, it goes down, press it again, it may go up all the way, or you may repeat this drill 2 or 3 more times. It's chain driven. I adjusted the "raise" pressure screw on the back a while back, and it seemed to fix the problem. I now have it set as high as it will go. Is it just worn out? It doesn't bother me much, but my wife parks HER car in the attached garage, etc, etc, etc.

When's the last time you checked or changed the battery? I have the same door opener also from Sears it sounds like and mine right now is acting up. I hit the button and nothing happens unless I sit there for what feels like forever and wait for it to figure itself out and open normally. I need to change the battery in mine.
Have you also checked the safety sensors at the base of the door railing and see if they are out of alignment or have something on them or in the way like a cob web?
They're noisy too. I would like to get a Genie screw drive unit as they are quiet.

Could be a number of things: track alignment, loose roller/bracket, weak battery, etc.. Also, it's been very cold here (NJ) and this affects metal and greases. Start with the battery and work from there.

All the remote should do is start the process. Once the thing starts up, or down, it should be all in the opener itself. Like the others, I'd check the sensors and maybe lube the rollers/track for the door, especially if it has been cold out.

You could use the emergency release to disconnect the door from the opener, and operate it by hand to see if it's sticking anywhere.
If it's working smoothly, then it must be in the opener. Seems like mine has separate sensitivity adjustments for up and down.
One of mine has a loose connection inside and quits working unless I smack it on the side...
