Just got done doing Club Trials at MMP. Steering pump expired, on my 97 Trans Am, by the end of the day. Oil everywhere, strange sound, no power steering. You know! What brand steering pump do you recommend? Or, do I just get one at Checker Auto????????

Save yourself the trouble and aggrevation and just buy a Turn One pump and pulley. Do it once and forget it.

Power steering cooler also with redline fluid for sure. I have no issues since I installed.

Were the LT1 cars available with the same factory power steering cooler like the LS1 cars?

I don't believe so.

I have used two different solutions on two different fourth gens and both worked for me.

1) Leave everything else alone and get a Turn One PS pump.

2) Go to underdrive pulleys and a small aftermarket cooler.

In both instances, I also exclusively used Red Line D4 ATF as the fluid. I have no idea how important this is but I do it because I haven't had any issues.

FWIW, if money and car class are not an issue, I like #2 better.

I think this combo we can all agree on.

I have been running #2 for 2+yrs now. I run the Redline fluid at the botom of the stick with only one problem, the steering does have some cavitation at time's.

When the Autozone pump gives up next time, i will replace with a T1 pump if i have the $$$

autozone pump, B&M stacked plate cooler, Valvoline synthetic fluid.
I did loose a pump at TWS last year in August... during the texas summer but as far as I know that pump had 16x,xxx miles on it and it was just a seal that let loose.
my setup? so far so good.

I just did a track day at MMP yesterday! Talk about great fun! I'll post up more on that later.

Anyway, my PS pump expired 1/2 way through my track day. My best guess is it sprung a leak. The stock pump survived years of autocross and 2 track days.

I think driving without power steering helped improve my technique. Driving "the line" (or at least my inexpert best attempt) made steering much easier. Make a mistake, and then I had to work hard to turn the wheel. I also learned to shift and then turn, it was hard to turn with one hand whilst shifting. It was also easier to feel what the car was doing, it seemed like I could feel the microsecond the car was getting unsettled and correct things right away. Now what was really hard was turning the car at low speed with the Hoosier tires hot and sticky right after a session!

Do folks have a recommendation for a supplier for a turn one pump? Is there a frraxer that sells them?

Buy direct... I did on mine and I can guarantee they're great to work with.

Talked with these guys at a trade show a while back and they seem to make quality parts and with a lot better pricing than Turn One. My next pump will be from these folks.

Nobody yet (including me), but I could always call them and see about a GP or what it takes to become a dealer. Try to add it to the list of things I can get.

I just ordered a Turn 1 pump from Turn 1.

They said LT1 pumps are getting scarce, and sold me their 2nd to last pump. He suggested storing my old pump, as it could be rebuilt in the future if I needed.

I'm sending them a couple pumps to rebuild.

I just talked with "Kevin" and explained my application and how I wanted something like a Turn One pump.

He said a pump off the shelf would cost $180. If I sent him a pump, it would cost $80. He said he could build it to what ever specification I wanted.

Is this mostly an LT1 issue or do LS1's have just as many problems with PS pumps?

Thanks for the heads up, Mitch. I keep spitting fluid out of my 3rd gen pump and this will be a lot cheaper then a Sweet pump in the future.
