So im getting my 91 firebird ready for the next autox season, and was wondering what you guys would reccomend as the best tire for stock class autox racing. i just picked up a set of 16" crosslace wheels, and according to the rules to remain in stock class the treadware rating must be above 140 any suggestions? what are you guys runnin? brand, model ,tire, size etc.. any input would be most appreciated.

You should re-read the rules, if you are talking about National Solo rules under SCCA the tire only needs to be DOT approved, no treadwear rating is specified.

The best tire IMHO is the Hoosier A6, but the V710 Kumho is a very very close second place. The Hoosier is built here and has better quality control, though.

If you're running in a local street tire class that really requires 140+ treadwear, your choices are pretty limited. The best tires in that class only go up to 225/45-16. That will work on a 16x8 rim (and works well on a 3rd gen RX7TT) but it may be a little small on a heavier fbody. Other than that, the treadwear rating typically start around 300.

SCCA F Stock Solo competition allows any DOT-approved tire, as indicated above. Given the same tire size, the Hoosier is probably best right off the trailer, but tend to be short-lived, usually being really good for about 30 runs. Their stickiness continues to drop off bit-by-bit from about run 3 onward.

Kuhmo Victoracer V700, if you can still get them in your required size, last a bit longer, and take a few runs to really get good. They tend to 'go off' that is, loose grip with age, more slowly than the hoosier. Good tire for regional events where you have lots of runs, and for schools.

Kuhmo Ecsta V710 tends to be better than the V700 earlier in the event, but don't like to get hot. Tire surface temps >~120 degrees at the start of a run are almost too hot. The tire will feel 'greasy' toward the end of your run. You will want to start spraying the tires with water to cool them after your first run.

I ended up getting the Hankook Ventus RS2's. They fit my 16 x 8's and I love them.

Plus they aren't sticky enough to hide my mistakes.

Check out the thread I made a while ago, there was some fantastic advice in it!

thx for the link, i was thinking that was the tire i was going to go with, as it is the only type in the 245 16" size for my thirdgen. I ran a set of kumho 225 60r15 ASX's last season, and am ready to step up to some stickier rubber thx again.

So hankook is to debut the ventus RS3 in april, it says that it should perform 30% better than the previous tire. ive searched all over but cannot find out if they will be releasing a 245 45 16. anyone hear anything about what sizes will be released?
