Well my shop is pretty bad I don't get to come home very much, about 3 days a month. So this is how it ends up with the trash before and after an event. And a motor swap.......I'm off to work

I collect alot of stuff

Mine's less of a mess...but only because it's smaller.

my shop is smaller but just as bad. only your's is mostly car stuff , mine gets lots of thing from the hou & yard too.

Our's isn't as bad yet, but we're still moving stuff in. We manage to fill a shelf faster than we can order them and get them put together. There's a lot of stuff on the floor right now.

We did get almost all the cars moved in last weekend. We can't move the race car in yet, as we don't have the driveway poured yet. When (if) it rains, the area surrounding the shop turns into a swamp bog.

The garage was quite packed, mostly with car and car-project stuff. Our Impala SS was a substitute shelving unit, the garage was so full.

I wish that mine was that messy! I'm working out of a 2-car garage, half of which is my wife's side. So, I've got a 22' wall with shelves, an 8' workbench with a couple vices, and a pegboard. That's all I had to work with when building my car.

Well I don't have much space in my small 2 car garage so everything has to be neet and organized. Therefore my garage is almost 5S except I don't do the chalk outlines. But I can tell you exactly where everything is at any time. I never have to hunt for tools. I hate hunting for tools.

I did the 2 car garage all my life until i bought this house, it was MY main reason for buying this home

The shop is still not finished(never will be im sure), not enough Elec outlets, no Air, no lift, and not enough Room! lol

How big is that building and about how much did it run you? Where did you get the building?

I ask because I am planning on getting a house with room for a shop and am in the market.

I'm packing...I'm moving into your garage. You won't even notice that I'm there. I'll bring a Tig welder (if you have one, then we'll have two) and power tools...I don't eat much...

I sold a 1,200 lb capacity "cart" that I bought as a pit cart a few years back. It never made it to the track and was taking up too much room. So, that's officially gone as of yesterday. I had to dig it out of the corner and then repack the crap into the garage. I actually have a bit more workspace now and if I can get my friends arcade game out of here, I'll have even more room. Maybe I'll get this place organized eventually. Of course I want to move and I keep dragging heavy shop equipment home.

The shop has been a dream of ours since before we bought our current place. It was one of the items on the list when we were house-hunting; enough property to build a shop. We now have 2.5 acres. We could have probably put it on less, maybe 1.5, but anything less, and things feel crowded.

It's been more than 10 years coming. The original plan was to deck out a second floor for a 'gameroom', glorified efficiency apartment where I could go to get cleaned up, or guests could sleep in so they don't have to deal with our mutts. The estimates with the gameroom were over the top.

It's 3200 square feet, with a 20X80 'carport' on one side. It's 20' high, so there's room for the gameroom in the future. Since we had the place built, and still had our cars in various storage, I decided to paint the floor while it was clean and empty. My wife and I and a friend cleaned, prepped and painted the floor in a 4-day weekend. We used U-Coat-It. I am quite pleased with the way it turned out.

The three covered cars were at three different storage units. We have a cover for the SVO, but it's kind of worn, and I'm putting it back together from the paint work.

Cost? In Texas, ~$137K. That didn't include fleshing out the power or the floor coating. We have 200 amp breaker in the shop, with power pulled to it, but I haven't put in outlets or lights yet. That'll probably be next after I get all the storage units emptied up and that monthly drain on the checkbook is gone. We have water to the outside of the shop. I'll probably build a small bathroom in the corner where we had them put in a frameout, just so I have water and facilities inside.

Right now, I'm trying to get a partial driveway poured, but concrete is obscene. Heck, 1/3 the cost of the building was in concrete alone. If I can get a driveway poured to where our gravel driveway ends, then I can park the race car/trailer and truck back there. Until then, the race car stays in the garage, and our daily drivers stay outside in the weather.

It's getting there, and it sure is cool to open the doors and see all our cars under one roof. Some day I'll get to work on them, and not the shop. ;-)

I know what you mean about organizing things. I added an additional level to the two storage racks we have today. Step 1: remove the stuff on the upper shelves so I could partially-disassemble them to start the move vertically. I think the extra shelf space up there will be quite handy. I only put light/stored stuff up there, like the spare dish racks for our home dishwasher and the original headlights for our 95 SS (we have export T85 lights in the car now).

Tomorrow I get some more plywood, cut it up, paint it so it will work in the new shelving unit I have to assemble tomorrow. Then we can bring some more crap home from storage.

Give me a month, and you'll be wondering when the disaster hit!

Reminds me of when we built our shop ("only" 1700 sq ft.) and when I looked inside it for the first time I thought to myself "we will never ever need all this space".

HA! Well seven years later, I don't even have enough room for Kevin's welder!

This was a couple weeks ago. I have since moved the 1970 Norton Commando 750 (that my dad bought new and is now completely disassembled) so that the M3 can get in the garage.

Ours, too! When designing the thing, we figured we'd just go live in the second floor 'gameroom' and leave the house for the pets. Alas, we have to wait for that.

We finished cleaning out the car storage places, and brought the engine hoist and my Dad's toolbox home. We now have a toolbox in the shop. That's a BIG improvement. Next step up will be pulling power and lights throughout the place. I'm contemplating doing it myself, but the estimate for lighting and power is $4000.

Can you tell me what size it is, and where you got it? About how much did it cost as it sits?

That's with no inside plumbing, or power run out of the breaker panel.

That's a nice workbench. Did you build it, or get it from somewhere? I have some plans for a workbench I haven't executed yet, so I'm always open to other ideas. I plan on bolting it to the back wall, and make it about 1/2 the length of the back wall, with room for tool boxes, engine stands, and such.

Thanks. I built it. It has a 3x5' hardwood Maple top that started out as 3 pieces that I got on from the kennedy tool box clearance store. I had my brother take it to wood shop to plane, glue, belt sand, and varnish. The base is built from scrap 2x4's, 2x2's and plywood. I'm using the tupperware containers as drawers/storage containers.

I wish mine looked as clean and organized as you guys.

By next week when the car is done, I will start cleaning up and having a performance parts garage sale.

Ahh, forgot that info. It's a Rigid building, put together by a local steel building builder, Homeland Builders. All-in-all, they did a pretty decent job. I'm still waiting for my wind storm certificate, but that is apparently the fault of the State of Texas. The building is supposedly built to be good for 120 MPH winds. I'm thinking that at the next hurricane, we'll go stay in it. ;-)

It has looked damn sexy on a shelf or floor for about 2 years now too.



I am almost there, I have finally sorted out how to plumb it up. It is on its 3rd or 4th design now. This one seems to b a winner.

In a week or so it should be under the hood and running. We did have it on a dyno in Dec 08 and it made 643lb ft@ 4500rpm at the flywheel so she has down low grunt. It idled smooth as silk to at 800rpm with a stupid big cam that would only idle at 1350rpm with a carb on it.

I am looking forward to being able to park the other car in the garage again.

Hmm, I don't consider 4500 RPM to be 'down low', but nearly 650 lb-ft is nice torque from any small block.

Be careful, I'm thinking that getting that car off the ramps is going to be 'fun'.


Please post pics when you get it all bolted up, even if it doesn't run. I need to send a pic to my engine builder. That's sweet!
