I changed my clutch/flywheel this past weekend on my 97 Trans Am. I had a little trouble getting the center console out and decided that punching it with my fist would be helpful. It wasn't. When I punched it, I hit the ashtray lid and broke one of the hinges on the ashtray lid. Now it it sits crooked and won't stay shut while driving.

The interior of the car is tan leather and the console is that typical 4th gen gray plastic.

Anyone have one of these FS?

According to my information, this is the same part number for 97-99 M6 'birds.

This has been harder than I expected. I found two online sources claiming that they had one of these but when I contacted them, they really didn't. Going rate seems to be about $40 if you can find one (ouch!), One seller suggested that I buy the whole console but that was just too large of a pill to swallow.

gmpartsdirect.com no longer lists them as an active part. Maybe I'll call my local Pontiac dealer (before they disappear!) and see what happens with them.

I am willing to pay market price for one, in case any of you are wondering.

I leaned on mine and broke the hinge.

If it is just the little pin of the hinge. I drilled a hole clean through and used a same sized socket head cap screw with a nyloc nut. It is better than new and likely stronger. I even drilled the hole by hand with a small pair of vise gripes to hold the drill and just repeated 180 degree twists. It took maybe 20 minutes to fix it. That included removing the top of the console. It helps that I have a full drill index so getting a perfect size was easy.

I hope this makes sense.

Actually, I did something very similar once I saw how expensive and hard to find it was going to be.

I, too, drilled out the place where the broken pin was, chose a nail that was the same diameter of the pin, cut the nail to length, inserted it through the hole leaving the nailhead on the inner part and then used epoxy to secure the nailhead to the lid. I actually didn't try to install it yet but I too think that this is stronger than stock...

Just the same, thanks for the tip.

I had pulled to cover of for a couple pics for you, but the focus was not that good.

For future reference then. You can see the socket head on the left and the threads on the right going through to the nylok.

Glad you got it sorted out.
