I posted at CMC and I'll post here too. I am looking for a how-to on roll cage building. I have a buddy that has a metal shop with everything we need to build it except know how. I know its gotta be inspected by Nasa and I've read over their requirments. Just looking for some hints or tips.

If you start poking around here(chassis/suspension) you will find alot of info. But, you will want to get as much info possible before you do anything. Talk to as many roadracing cage builders as you can, maybe they will help you out, the internet and books are good to. Than come up with a design and come on back here and post it up, we will do are best to help you out.

I'll offer a different tact - talk to too many folks and they will just confuse you:

Pick a well built cage and copy it.

The latter two examples have some features that are not CMC legal, but the core cage elements are very similar.

Print out the pics, make a notebook. Review the CMC rules and mark up what you can and cannot do. Ask questions.

Do you have the right bender and welder, and know how to use them? Do you know what tubing to use? Do you know the difference between DOM and ERW? Have you got the car completely stripped and clean?

It’s a CMC cage.

I'd highly recommend buying a pre-bent kit from Alan. It will greatly simplify things, you’ll probably end up cost neutral or slightly ahead (since it sounds like you’ll be paying someone else to do the bending otherwise), and most importantly end up with a better, safer, more roomy cage that will pass tech. You’re buying from a guy that is a Tech inspector himself, and has done this a ‘few’ times.

You can't go wrong with a Blain Fab cage! I did!

Also, there are "legal" cage's and than there are cage's that will let you go home if something bad happens! A legal cage isn't always the best choice, we are not pro drivers! We have familys, friends, and a life to go home to after the race weekend is over.

Unfortunately, I'm too far away to take advantage of Blanie's cages. But I could take advantage of the prebent kit. I'm 6'2 and need all the room I can get.

Same here, and the Blaine Fab cage made sure I was safe in a crash being hit by two cars, and my car was rebuildable. Safety is priority #1!

Lee, my cage kit came from Alan. I'm in Ohio and it was shipped to me on a pallet. You're never too far away and Alan builds FANTASTIC stuff (if I'd just get off my butt and get it finished).
