Hey everybody, I'm Dane and I hail from Lubbock, TX. The land of cotton, cows, dust and straight roads. Looking forward to picking up on some good information on this board.

I own a 2000 V6 Firebird and a Mazda3s GT which is my wife's car. I have had a love for road racing, but have yet to take part in any trackdays. I don't race on Sundays so that is probably one big contributor.



The bird has a bit of a lengthy mod list, most of them bought second hand through part outs or abandoned builds. The engine rebuild started off as a basic cam install and replace the leaking intake gasket until I popped the valve covers and found oil sludge in the 135K mile engine. Here's the rundown:

I have recently picked up a set of Speedline Mistrals from a guy on Racingjunk. They were campaigned on their 94 Camaro and they are stationed in the Fla area. I've got to get them cleaned and powdercoated as the paint they had on there is flaking off from mounting and dismounting so many different sets of tires. Anybody ever seen these? I haven't heard from Speedline corporate yet on how many of these they made but I'm looking forward to running them.

I've always been curious as to how a V6 would stack up on a short, technical course like Motorsport Ranch.

Something to consider ... in June, NASA-Texas is making a trek to Hallett, a road course just west of Tulsa, OK. Lots of F-Cars and Mustangs from regions all over the country are coming for this event for some great racing action. A part of the venue is HPDE sessions. It would be a great time to get to know a LOT of folks on this board from around the country.

Watch powdercoating wheels. Aluminum wheels don't like to be heated (such as baking the powdercoating) and in a few cases wheels have cracked. I'd consider the option of stripping them and just repainting or some other refinishing. I had painted wheels that I touched up every year (quick shot of spray (wheel) paint) and they looked great.

I lived in Plainview for a few years as a kid then spent the rest of it in Dickens. I moved to Lubbock to get a better financial footing and finish school. I've got quite a few parts from Scoggin lol!

There has been a guy in the local SCCA chapter that has schooled quite a few people in his V6 Camaro. Stock stripper hard top and manual windows lol! He brings it out to some events here and there, I guess whatever he fancies for the weekend!

I'll keep an eye out for that event. We have a local f-body guy that does some ORR, Auto-X and HPDE's in his Camaro and Z06. Goes by Kelly, nickname is Bones. It might have to wait as I'm pressed for time trying to get classes knocked out before applying to pharmacy school.



Thanks! I'll look into that. I might see if the powdercoater that works for my dad has a low cure temp paint.

If anything I'll get them stripped and get them sprayed properly. I will more than likely paint them the same color as the C5 Z06 Speedlines (light gunmetal/charcoal) in semigloss re-apply a speedline spoke logo and call it a day.

Dupli-Color does a "graphite" wheel paint. I used it on my 4th gen and it looked great. And, it was super inexpensive.

Cool, I'll have a chat with my dad about prepping the wheels and getting them done that way. He's super busy in the shop, deals with a wide variety of cars day in and day out. Ranging from factory stock restorations, hot rods, weekend track cars and stupid fast street cars lol!

We've certainly chewed a lot of the same dirt ...

3 years in Crosbyton. Sorta dated a girl who lived in McAdoo ...

Then we moved Way south ... 2 years in Denver City

before settling in East Texas.

All that was in Jr. High and some High School ...

140K mile engine, I am led to believe the previous owner skimped on some oil changes as they put 65K miles on it in two years time (West Texas & New Mexico open roads).
