But I am 300# AND 6'1" and I do use one of those seats in my 3rd gen TA. It sits on 1/4" thick custom brackets attached to the factory studs. I use a small pad to raise me up so my head just misses the roof. I have stripped car, but it 'should' clear a console.

How about a Corbeau Forza II?

I have a Forza II Wide in my car! I was looking at a FX1 and scrambled the ident.

That one is a tube frame seat, and not recommended for track use. If you go with Corbeau, the composite shell FX1 would be a better choice.

I'd also consider a Kirkey Intermediate RR seat - available in 18" width for about $50 more than the FX1.

What about a car that has no roll bar to attach a seat back brace?

My car has a 4 point in it.

In that case I would prescribe an FIA with current certification, which does not require a back brace, with the caveat that if you do tip over without a rollbar and the roof collapses, a race seat may increase occupants injuries. Theoretically an OEM seat will allow the drivers upper body to smoosh out of the way, where a race seat will hold it upright. YMMV.

My standard advice for adding the basic track safety systems (rollbar, seat, harnesses) is to do all 3 at once, or none.

The front seat mount doubler is 20.5" wide, the Kirkey 18" is 18.25" wide at the base. Add 3/16" for side mount plates to each side and you have nearly an inch to spare at the base. The only other tight spot is at the tunnel next to the shift boot opening - the front inside lip of the seat can contact the tunnel there, worse for shorter drivers and worse for composite seats which are bulkier with the rolled lip. Generally not a problem with an aluminum seat since they are narrower here than the composite.

Ok, so I have no experience with any of these seats. I'm also a slim 135#. However, on the subject of fitting with the console, I have some feedback. I bought a used set of sparco sport type seats from a friend last year. They are the standard width, but have an adjuster knob on each side for the reclining back. To keep from f'ing up my console I had to remove the inside knob on both seats and take a cutoff wheel to the shaft it mounted to. I know this exact problem won't be an issue for you, but it gives you a mental picture of the clearance in there when you add different seats. On the plus side, my sparcos are actually more comfy than factory and have more support! If you're not required to have a real racing seat, I'd check them out!
