I picked up the Camaro SS Friday night and drove it home. It's neat to drive one again after all these years and I'm looking forward to building a clone of my old 2002 Z28. Right now I'm sorting out what I have and don't have and what needs done. Currently there's a clunk under the transmission. I believe it's the torque arm bushing so that's on the list of things to replace. Also, when I picked it up it had a really bad miss above 1/3 throttle and wasn't running very well. I drove it most of the way home (180 miles or so) and filled the tank when it got to 1/4 tank. That helped, but it's still occasionally flashing a random misfire and it's way down on power. I put some fuel injector cleaner and water remover in the tank to see if that helps. We scanned it and it logged 250-400 misfires on all cylinders and cylinder 2 had 850-ish and cylinder 7 had 1800+ misfires logged. Tomorrow I'm going to put a fuel filter, plugs and plug wires on it and see if that straightens it out. I'm guessing the plugs are fouled or the fuel filter is clogged. It wasn't driven much and I get the feeling that the gas that was in the tank might have been pretty old. I've also got a blown speaker in one of the front doors (or both). I'm going to have to see if Monsoon speakers are still available or not. I haven't looked for one in years (if ever). Are they still out there or should I just make plans to upgrade the stereo and speakers with something with ipod controls and such?

Anyway, it's a nice looking SS and I'm sure I'll sort out the various mechanical problems pretty quickly...or I hope so.

Just-under 2 years ago, I bought a 2001 Z28 for a daily driver. It would have been that one, but my wife and daughter wanted an auto so I went with a different car.

I can't remember the last time I saw that car driven. It would not surprise me if your problems are simply due to old gas in the car. The tune up items that you plan to do mirror what I always do (I usually do all fluids, too) when I buy a used car, which is every car I have ever owned.

Monsoon system - learn from my experience. Spend a few extra bucks and find the correct GM pieces. My Z had essentially all speakers blown and when I priced NIB GM pieces, I had a heart attack and figured I could build up a reasonable sounding system piece by piece. If you Google the Monsoon system, you will find good, detailed, accurate tech on them. From memory, there are weird things like the door speakers are actually 2 separate speakers. In my case, I bought the correct 4 speakers for the doors, wired in the crossover and then hacked holes with a hole saw to allow the tweeters to fit. It looks OK, but now I hacked the doors and it sounds like crap. The sail panel speakers are 2-ohm (?!). Best I could tell, there is only one supplier out there with 2-ohm speakers that fit that aren't stupid expensive. Like the door speakers, they sound like crap. Anyway, don't pinch pennies on this and get the right pieces (check eBay) or you'll end up out of audio money and a system that makes noise and that's about it.

Plugs looked lean but I swapped them and installed new wires anyway. I tossed a new fuel filter on it and now it runs like it should. Ah, that's much better!

regarding speakers:
I just put a set of Infinity Kappa 60.9cs (6.5") in the doors and Infinity Kappa 50.9cs (5.25") in the hatch. Several years ago I put a set of CDT ES-06 midwoofers in the sail panels. It sounds a lot better, even with the Stock monsoon head unit and stock amplifier.
My stock head unit is on its way out, so I am replacing it with a Pioneer DEH-x9500bhs.

LS1Tech has a sticky about the monsoon system.

I still have the stock front and hatch speakers/tweeters, but I did trim the wires off (so I didn't have to solder wires in the car when putting in the new speakers). Both sets still work fine, but they are 11 yrs old...
If you want to go the easy route and not buy new speakers, I would be happy to send my speakers to you. Depending on how much shipping costs, I can eat the cost of shipping or split the shipping with you, for getting them out of my garage.

Kenwood head unit, Pioneer 3 ways in the doors, Kenwood 3 ways in the sail panel, JL HD 900/5 amp and a Infiniti 1030w 10 inch sub.

It ROCKS.

I put this head unit in the car, has aux in for mp3's. Has a USB port, Pandora and XM capable and is also blue tooth capable. For the $110 I paid it's hard to beat.

BTW there is a post on LS1tech about aftermarket speakers that will work with the Monsoon system. Has something to do with the ohm load for the Monsoon that is different.

Kevin, Congratulations on the nice looking ride.
If it does not work out with the used stock speakers, I suggest finding a local speaker shop and getting the speakers rebuilt. I did this for my passenger door speaker 2 years ago and now the driver side needs to be rebuilt. I believe it was around $35 to have the door speaker rebuilt.
Most of the time I prefer listening to the V8 symphony anyway.

I recently put some old petrol in my lawnmover and it wouldnt run right and thats a 4hp Briggs & Stratton thing lol!

It's running great now. And I gathered up a proper set of SLP Camaro SS front floor mats (from Jegs), added an SLP "lid", found an SLP TCS module (well, a friend did, but it's here now) and I'm looking for a set of V6/Camaro Z28 rear bump stops to replace the SS parts and round up the rest of the parts for the C5/C6 brake conversion. I didn't realize how scarce some of these parts are getting these days.



I've already threatened to sell this one, sell my C4 and go trade the Jeep on a C6. As long as I can find all the parts I need, I think the SS will be a neat one to have around. It's a lot nicer to get in and out of than the C4 and the T tops are so much easier to remove than the targa on the Corvette. The Corvette makes this look like a practical fun car to own.

Nice looking car Kevin. I have thought about getting another Firebird and moving the racecar stuff over to a street car. But it's just to much work. So I was looking for something that was fun to drive around town. I had three things on my list, C6 z06, CTS-V, or a Malibu boat. The boat won! C6 prices should drop when the 7 comes out.

In my experience boats have been cheaper (versus a 'race car'), including my jet ski. Just depends on the boat and what you do with them.

We'll see. I have too many projects. I really need to get the Corvette back together so I can get the Camaro in the garage....but I still need some parts for the Corvette and parts for the SS too. I need to get it assembled by fall.
